Film to DVD/miniDV transfer question

I have super-8 films (from home and student movies) that i'd like to transfer to DVD and/or DVCPRO and/or Mini-DV. The Internet is loaded with ADs. Where do I begin? Looking for advice on finding best quality service (reasonable prices preferred).

Thanks...
Jeff

Re: Film to DVD/miniDV transfer question

There are two main methods used to transfer S8 to video, either a professional Rank or other telecine device (the same as is used to transfer 16mm and 35mm to video), or the cheap way, where someone sets up a projector and videotapes the output.

You want the "good" way.

You'll find Rank telecine's at places like www.cinepost.com, www.tfgtransfers.com, and www.yalefilmandvideo.com. Rates are around $150 to $250 per hour.

However, there's another service that I've used which is very, very good and quite reasonably priced too. Quality is right up there with a Rank. And their charges are easier to understand: it's a flat-rate $20 per 50-foot roll of film, including scene-to-scene color correction.
