Film Studio Ceiling Color

If you are asking about a sound stage, I have seen both unfinished wood, acoustical batting material and flat black painted. There doesn't appear to be a "standard".

How high are the ceiling?

I'm a still photographer and my studio has 15' ceiling. I have it painted black as I like to control all light in the studio.

I have heard many arguments over the years for white, 18% gray, or black. I have also worked in studios with each of the 3 types.

Arguments for white (both walls and ceiling or either) is to reflect light and create a large, soft reflected light. Very handy. If the space is very small, though, it starts to become very hard to control that giant reflector, even when you aren't pointing a light source at it.

In larger studios, just mind the inverse square law and it is easy enough to keep light far enough away to not be a problem.

I personally like to paint with light and I want a complete empty canvas when I start.

18% grey can go either way. You can blow out the grey and make it white with plenty of light or starve it for light and turn it black.

Just some thoughts on different approaches. For possible better help, give us some specifics about your studio space. What are the dimensions, LxWxH, and what are you using it for? Building sets with flats, shooting against a cove, or other use?
