Film Students' Cry For Help!

Hi Everyone,

I’m a long time lurker, first time poster, and I thought that you nice guys and girls out there may be able to help out a set of poor, desperate film studies students. Sorry if I’m posting this in the wrong section, but it doesn’t seem to fit into any of the other categories very well…

Here’s the basic run down… several members of the class and I have to create a video presentation assignment on any current trend or emerging aspect of the film industry. As such, my group has chosen to look at ‘The Digital Revolution’, and intends to show that it has affected everybody, from major Hollywood players (e.g. the new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy) to low budget indie filmmakers (i.e. you).

Whilst we are managing to find enough material for the Hollywood aspect, and mid-range productions (such as ’28 Days Later’, ‘Murderball’, etc) we are having a tough time with the low budget aspect as, understandably, material isn’t particularly widespread.

So…this is where I hope you come in! We are looking for independent digital filmmakers that have had at least *some* experience (however limited) dealing with the ‘industry’, be it via festivals, television executives or DVD production houses.
All that’s involved is telling us what you’ve done so far, pointing us to your website (or a place where we can see a demo of some of your material), and then answering a few of our questions about your personal experience/opinion of the industry.

We aren’t looking for an in-depth interview, just an answer to four or five questions that we can incorporate into our video presentation. We’d be happy for you to post your replies here in text format, as *any* help is appreciated – however, what would be ideal is if you could record your responses onto your computer and then upload them in MP3 format to a GMail account for direct use on the video itself!

I can promise you that the recording wouldn’t be used for anything other than the presentation video, and if you don’t want to answer all the questions, then feel free to ignore the ones that don’t interest you; you could even provide an in-depth answer to just a single question if you wished!

I’m afraid that we can’t offer you anything more than our gratitude for answering our questions, but if you have *any* further queries, big or small, please feel free to post them here, or send them to the e-mail account. Our deadline is April 28th, so if you could post your responses by then you’d have the group’s eternal thanks.

Here are the questions; they’re slightly ambiguous on purpose, so feel free to take them in any direction you wish:

1) How do you think the film industry is changing with regards to digital?

2) How have low cost, professional cameras (such as the Panasonic DVX100) affected your filmmaking and/or your dealings with the industry?

3) What challenges or myths do you think face the low budget digital film maker when it comes to dealing with the film industry?

4) How has modern technology (internet, DVD, HD) affected your methods of production, distribution and/or exhibition?

5) What do you think the future holds for digital film making?

If you are providing your vocal response by MP3 can you please send the file(s) to: dvpresentation at googlemail dot com – please note that any MP3 files sent must be less than 10Mb in size so GMail doesn’t reject them for being too large.

Thanks once again! :)
