Film student needs HELP!..Print To Video

UGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

So, I shot my project in the 24p advanced mode. Final cut pro captured it beautifully and I made sure to set it on the advanced pull down removal settings when capturing.

The problem is why I print to video. The cam corder will not play the video from the timeline. It leaves it as a blank screen. So, I found this in my cinema tools reader:

Adding Pull-Down to 23.98 fps Video
Final Cut Pro lets you add pull-down to 23.98 fps video as you output it via FireWire. As
discussed in the previous section, this is useful when you are editing 23.98 fps video and
want to output it to an NTSC device.
To add pull-down back in while sending 23.98 fps video to an NTSC device via
FireWire:
1 In Final Cut Pro, select the sequence.
2 In the Playback Control tab of the Sequence Settings window, choose a pull-down pattern
from the Pulldown Pattern pop-up menu.
See “Pull-Down Patterns You Can Apply to 23.98 fps Video” on page 201 for details on the
available patterns.
3 Output the video using your FireWire connection.
Refer to the Final Cut Pro documentation for details on outputting video.
The pull-down is performed on the video that is sent out of your computer via FireWire.

Well, I did all that and it still doesn't work. I tried to print to video some of my older projects (shot on another minidv at 29.97 and it works just fine. So there has to be something wrong with the 24p. Anyone know what's going on...Thanks so much :)

Figured it out!

Figured it out!

Well I figured out the problem. My editing time base was set at 24p. I started a new project and set the editing time base to 23.98. I then copied my project and rendered it in the 23.98 time base.

Now, on most sites and in the manuals, it says to add at 3:2 pulldown or the 2:3:3:2: pulldown when outputting. Even though it works now and it plays back on the cam corder, Final Cut Pro gives me a pop up thats says " using a 2:3:3:2 pulldown might result in lower quality. That's weird because I thought applying that when outputting with dvx100 would be better quality. Anyway, at least I figure it out! :)

Ouch, you had to re-render it? That sucks...

I have no clue directly concerning final cut pro on how it works but I believe that it should automatically do a 3:2 pullup to the video when it's exporting or you should have the option to do that. I didn't know that the timebase of the original project would change that. Maybe it's just final cut pro :P

Re: Film student needs HELP!..Print To Video

okay, i have something of an elementary question; briefly, what is pulldown :-/ . i've seen it mentioned quite often so i should probably know what it's all about. we've had problems printing to tape and this could be part of the reason. thank youiiii [those are upside down exclamation marks...my shift key doesn't work on this mid-90s recycled work pc]

thegreenone,

Pulldown is the process that the camera does to take 24fps video and convert it to 30fps video that it then records on the tape.

There are different ways in which the camera does this. In F5 on the dvx, the camera uses a 2:3:2:3 format which means that the 'jitter' frames that it makes up between the actual 24 frames that are captured are spaced out evenly so that it looks smoother. When you capture in this mode you usually want to edit with out pulldown removal in a 29.97fps timeline. So, normal DV timeline.

In F6 mode "24p Advanced", the camera uses a 2:3:3:2 pulldown format which in turn means that the camera will put the 'jitter' frames next to each other instead of spaced out between the true frames. Editing systems such as Final Cut have an option to capture with 'pulldown removal'. As the video is being captured the editing system removes the jitter frames from the video and restores the video to 24fps. If you are going to be mastering on film or if you would like to put a 24fps DVD together, then this is the way that you want to record and capture your footage in.

If you are just wanting the 24p look, then the F5 capture preset is the best option. It requires no other special capturing or timeline adjustments.

I hope this helped explain "pulldown" for you.

Now go have some fun!
