Film Soundtracks...

I think this has been talked about before, however I did a search and found nothing so I'll go ahead with the post. I need to go to the store and buy some soundtracks and wanted to know which ones you think are the best. Particularly horror. Although I think it would be good just to discuss great soundtracks in general...

Re: Film Soundtracks...

I love soundtracks. especially when it's pure hollywood. I love orchestrated ones as much as well composed modern stuff like the Matrix. It all depends on what kind of horror movie you're talking about. I never really liked any horror film soundtrack except for Halloween theme- which I can also flawlessly play on the piano myself. Other things like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on elm street isn't appealing to listen to. that's just my opinion of taste.
I own at least 14 soundtrack cd's. one of my recent favorites are KILL BILL- I mean the original stuff by RZA- although I do love the variety picks by Tarantino. after that, you wouldn't expect it but in a movie like K-PAX, the electronic and techno-like stuff mixed with clean sound piano is ... well im a sucker for those. and blade runner. the soundtrack is just nice to listen to in terms of how well it fit the movie.
so far my all time favorite is now, Lord of the Rings!!!

and of course, all John Williams stuff as well. you can spot his music anywhere.

Re: Film Soundtracks...

See for horror I'm not talking about slasher flicks. For instance I just picked up the shining soundtrack. Awesome stuff. Other soundtracks I'm listening to right now are Collateral and Heat.

Definitely. Most of the top composers have an easily-identifiable style.

Re: Film Soundtracks...

I used to collect movie soundtracks like mad . . . but that was because what I really wanted was the movie, and the soundtracks were usually the closest I could get (remember when VHS movies weren’t cheap?). I remember thinking in the 80s that it would be nice if this soundtrack on CD would include the movie . . .

Well, guess what? Now you can get the movies on disc, for, in many cases, the same price as the soundtrack CD. I got what I wanted!

Although I do love cinematic scores, I love the movies more, and it’s very difficult – almost impossible – for me to sit and listen to music while doing nothing else. Listening to a soundtrack is in many ways, to me, like being blind. I’m a very visual person.

All of which is apropos of nothing. One of the coolest scores is Danny Elfman’s from the 1989 Batman movie . . .

Re: Film Soundtracks...

Personally I love the Gladiator soundtrack, especially the last song, "Now We Are Free". And I'm talking about the original soundtrack, not the remixed techno beats. Lisa Gerrard has a fabulous voice, and when mixed with Hans Zimmer, it's magic. I pretty much like every soundtrack Hans does.

Re: Film Soundtracks...

Star Trek The Motion Picture has an amazing soundtrack. 1942 Conquest of Paradise is great. The last three or four Bond films have had nice soundtracks. Any of the Babylon 5 discs, Beetlejuice, Dune, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Edward Scissorhands, The Fifth Element, Gettysburg, Ghost in the Shell, Ocean's Eleven, Tron, and many many more.

Sorry that list is void of horror film soundtracks, but it's a good list nontheless. :-)

Some of the ones mentioned above are great choices.  I personally love

GLADIATOR
BLACK HAWK DOWN
ANYTHING BY JOHN WILLIAMS
GLORY

Horror?

THE THING
HALLOWEEN
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
THE FOG (There is a JC pattern here :P )

THE EXCORCIST
DRACULA (Coppola version)

Re: Film Soundtracks...

the only "horror" soundtracks I own are Hellbound:Hellraiser 2 and Suspiria. I am a fan of Hellraisers 1, 2, and 6(as for the others. . .blah!), and isnt that recognizable, except to horror fans. Easily one the best little known horror soundtracks out there!! AnchorBay currently sell Hellraiser 1+2 in one set, go out watch it to hear how good it is!! I remember that Danny Elfman said he got his inspiration for the Batman theme by listening to Hellbound. Hellbound the soundtrack may be out of print, but you should be able to find it easily on E-bay. As for Susipiria, I bought to 3 disc version of the dvd, and disc #3 was the soundtrack. The remix of the main title would work on a film you would make today than the original, unless you want that 70's synth horror score. Hope this helps.

Re: Film Soundtracks...

I listen to soundtracks at work. Musicmatch Jukebox has a radio station called Music Scores. Amazing how it brings back the imagery of a movie. I'm listening to Master and Commander and Crouching Tiger right now.

Others I've got
Last of the Mohicans
Shakespeare in Love
Matrix (all)
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
The Lord of Rings
Almost Everything by Danny Elfman, John Williams
The list is too long...

Re: Film Soundtracks...

Collateral had an awesome soundtrack. Spider-man 2 also had quite the score/soundtrack. Danny Elfman is quite amazing.

Randy Edelman is also very good. He's the guy who did the score for Dragonheart which includes that song used about a million times a year for trailers. It was used in Seven Years in tibet and various others.

The RZA's stuff is so awesome on that cd.

Other favorite soundtracks:

Requiem for a Dream- scares the hell out of me everytime I listen to it
Oh Brother Where Art Thou- Good old timey tunes. Lots of fun. ESPECIALLY Big Rock Candy Mountain, I love that song.
Boiler Room (the score)- The Angel is great at being subtle.
SLC Punk- Lots of good tunes.

Re: Film Soundtracks...

Oh Brother Where Art Thou gives me such a good feeling when i watch it...

"IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII am a man of constant sorrow..."

Re: Film Soundtracks...

That's such a great song. Too bad Clooney didn't sing it, or that would have made it 10 times cooler.

Unless he sucked at singing.... Which I assume is why he didn't sing it in the first place....

However it would have been interesting...

Re: Film Soundtracks...

My two favorite soundtracks are;

The Mission by Ennio Morricone

and

Planet of the Apes (the original) by Jerry Goldsmith

These two soundtracks couldn't be more different, but they are both amazing.

Re: Film Soundtracks...

I mean if it sounded the exact same way as it does now, but it was actually Clooney. They didn't have him sing because he does suck at singing. But it would have been cool!
