Hi,

I'm based in singapore, currently an engineer full-time and part-time as wedding videographer. I'm interested & keen to start a video production company that does the usual corporate videos, events, weddings and hopefully do some documentaries or drama series for TV. I have no actual experience with scripting, directing, producing, etc. Only experience I have are operating DVX for weddings and editing using premiere pro.

I want to crash start into this next career so am considering to take a course.
There's a local school that have a 2-yr full-time course on filmmaking.

Each student can focus on either Directing, Producing, Editing or Cinematography.

Would appreciate if someone who has gone through film schools in general advice on whether such training is helpful for the starting or running of the kind of business I mentioned. (will be a small scale one man operation kind).
And also, I intend to focus either on producing or directing, which I think is more relevant to what I want. What do you guys think ?

Thanks for reading !

wow, another singaporean - thats a rarity in this board. So far i know of 4 singaporeans on dvxuser. I'm only 16 so i can't give much advice about film schools, but its nice to know that i've discovered another singaporean

I am starting to get comfortable having my own production company doing some of that work. The best thing I did was get an internship for a one-man shop in Cincinnati. I could have skipped all of college, just did my internship, and I would have been better off cuz I still wouldn't be paying on my loans.

FYI, you don't have to look for a formal internship. Just find a company like what you would like to have yourself, and offer to work there for little or no pay. Suck in as much as you can, and more than likely, once the internship is over you'll have your first 'client' being the guy you just worked for. Good luck! It's a rough road, but it's worth it!

Malcolm,
Yeah, quite few s'poreans in here but I know there are some.
U 16 and u own a DVX ?? Wow !

Mike,
Your Echo Productions looked great. I saw the wedding services on ur website. May I know what's the difference between cinematic-style and documentary style ?
Your advice about internship sounds good. Good thing the filmmaking course is actually 1st year learning the theory and practical, while 2nd year is mainly internship and doing your own short film project.
