To postproduce sound for a feature film with protools mbox2 do you need to get dv toolkit? is there anyway around this?

thanks

You don't need to get DV Toolkit, but it actually is worth the money. First off, you'll probably need to import an audio-only OMF from the picture editer. Without DV Toolkit, you'll have to impose upon someone with DV Toolkit or Digitranslator to convert the files for you.

Beyond that, the SMPTE timeline ruler really helps keep things organized, and the ability to set the "nudge" to a single frame is pretty handy. Of course, you can set the nudge value to 0.0333 and get pretty close to a one-frame nudge. As for the TC ruler, you can use the window-burn on your work video for a positional reference. The TC ruler will make it easier to migrate your session up to a TDM system (ie. for the mix).

Broadband noise reduction can be useful in certain situations, though it won't save the day with most badly recorded dialogue. Vocalign sounds like a good idea, but I find it to be a poor substitute for well performed ADR, mixed well, in the hands of a skilled editor.

To sum up: plenty of ways to work around not having DV Toolkit, but having it may save you enough time to justify the expense.

smeini,

can you be more specific in what you plan to do?
If you need DV Toolkit just for wathing the synced movie while editing sound you could midisync to cubase sx3 (cheap on ebay) and watch the movie there...

You don't need DV toolkit to do post, and you don't need it to watch a video - it has no features that would help in that. You can even get TC with out it with a slightly wanky work around. Well actually two slightly wanky workarounds. The most universal is a plugin (that is free) that adds a TC window. Can't speak to it's accuracy but I know some people were using it. The second requites a session setup by someone else. TC exists in Le it's just not available as an option. If you get a session from a system that has TC and the nudge and grids are set to frames they will stay that way. In fact you can even change them inside the frame family. But if you ever pick something that isn't in the frame family the option goes away and you can't get it back. The same is true with the secondary TC display. it stays as set unless you change it. HD can show a secondary time line, don't know if Le can but if so I suspect it would be sticky also. DV toolkit is a pretty good deal, but not "Ne." to cut a feature. I supervised a feature where about 1/2 the editors were working on Le, including the designer and none had the DV toolkit (actually it wasn't available then) and it all worked out.
