Film Marketing and Promotion

Heeeeeeeeeeey. So I entered my film "Fathoms Deep" into two contests recently. The Big Break Movie contest put on by Rogue Media, and the reeldemic Trailer contest.

I was kinda baffled by how many views other films got in comparison to mine. I'd have roughly 20-40 views a day and other films would have 300-500/day. Even more depressing was the fact that most of those films that had tons of views didn't look anywhere near the quality of mine. Some were completely amateur.

After realizing this I sadly went to my films facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fathoms-Deep-Movie/166736910014760
to see that I had a whopping 50 likes!!!!

Even after hundreds of views, lots of website promotion and friendly emails I couldn't pull the views that these other filmmakers were pulling.

I feel I've made a very good film for this level of filmmaking and I'd like to show the work off. Do you all have any Marketing or Promotion ideas that you've tried or heard good things about?

start rants on youtube gain followers and then toss in a plug for yourself every now and then. HAHA no seriously.. it kindof works. i've seen it done a few times for when there's a contest and it's based on viewer votes. i'd think i've made a better piece but then realize some kid with a youtube page full of his rants has out viewed mine like 2000 to 1. the thing is he tossed in a plug that he made a silly video for a contest and well. he won.

Marketing is cut-throat. And very self serving when you think about it.

But........that's the nature of the beast. And something you have to overcome if you want to "get the word out". Things that you normally would despise, you find yourself doing.

If that is something you cannot accept (and I totally understand), find someone to market you. I did. Not bragging, but I now have international film-making interviews scheduled due to my realizing I couldn't market myself. I got someone else to do it.

Marketing is about identifying and reaching a market to accept (purchase, promote) your product.

Perfume is marketed to women via banners on beauty websites, ads in glamor magazines, etc.

Who does the topic of your film's appeal to? Who is your target audience? Where are they located?

I like the train of thought Snowleapord. I'm venturing a guess that the audience of this movie is going to be located reading the pages of alternative music magazines. I've written a handful of mid-low-level music magazines inquiring if they would do a story on the film.

So far 3 magazines are doing stories on the film. Film International, Unrated Magazine, and Screen Magazine.

Well this is something only you can answer...but what audience were you going for? IMO a bad poster is enough to keep people away from a good film. The posted you have above is very dark, hard to read...almost monochromatic but in a bad way. It's not inviting, and I don't mean the style. It's not likely that I would (me personally) click to watch a video after seeing a poster like that.

Not trying to be mean here, just speaking honestly. Marketing is about making those who you're going after feel like they need to watch what you're trying to sell. Your poster at least (I haven't seen the contest page you had setup) doesn't invite me.

Can we see what you were up against somehow? It might help in determine the cause because the heavy imbalance you're speaking of is odd to me.
