film look question

I asked a question once about a getting filmic look on my dvx in AE, and this response was interesting:

"The best way I have found is to do this. Make sure you shoot your footage at 1/60th shutter speed. Then take your footage into Premiere. Deinterlace it with Lower Field First. Then import the same footage again and Deinterlace it with Upper Field First. Now place the Lower Field First in Video Track 1. Then place the Upper Field First copy in Video 2. Change the Video 2 (Upper Field First) to 50% opacity. Bam, instant film look."

Has anypne done his done this before? Can one do it in 24p? Can anyone post a video usiing this technique?

Thank you,

Re: film look question

This is a technique you do not need if you are shooting progressive footage as the DVX creates. It's basically a form of deinterlacing to convert 60i to 30p with less resolution loss than discarding one of the fields.

Re: film look question

here it goes

1) import DV footage into the timeline and apply Effects>Image control>Gama/pedestal/gain.
make tiny adjustments to these settings to change the look, without adding too much extra color. Aim to add a bit more contrast.

2) Apply the Hue/saturation filter, and use the Master Saturation to reduce the overall color. A common mistake with DV is to over-saturate to look like film, but the result just looks like garish video. you're better off reducing saturation.

3) apply and adjust these filters clip by clip, don't be tempted to apply one filter to the whole movie
the real key to a convincing film look is adding a hint of motion blur, without reducing the sharpness

4) creat a new comp long enough to take your movie, import whole movie into the timeline and choose duplicate

5) Apply the reduce interlace flicker to the lower clip settings about 20, select the upper clip and set opacity to 80%
Export the clip to tape and watch on TV, because motion blur never shows up well on computer monitors

hope that helps.
