Film Lens Adapters Over Hd Lenses?

Someone on another topic posed the question about the harsh details of shooting in HD. It got me thinking:

The HVX lens is designed with HD in mind, right? So on the subject of say the G35 adapter or PS technik adapter, is there an issue with the lenses we use to get the SDOF for HD imagery? How would something like that affect the footage (ie. using say a Nikon lens in front of an HD lens)?

Thoughts?

The likely impact is not from the lens in front of the adapter, but the focus plane of the adapter itself. The achieved resolution of nearly every one of these adapters has been marginal for a camera with a SD resolution. Now, add the issue of an HD camera and the marginal performance of these devices becomes more of an issue.

I am not really certain if anyone wanting to use these types of adapters will really achieve much of a gain (at least in terms of resolution) over a DVX combination, other than the native 16x9 aspect ratio improvements. The better color sampling would be a benefit, but the lower sensitivity of the HVX combind with the loss from the adapter is going to make for a serious need to increase the lighting budget and with only small improvements.

Just something to consider. Now, if you are going to use the HVX without an adapter, then the benefits should be considerable.

Gotcha.

Well for me, and I'm sure for most users, the intent behind using a lens adapter is to achieve shallow DOF and the more filmic look associated with those lense adapters. I for one would want the comibination of HD resolution, 4:2:2 color space coupled with the artistic filmic quality those lenses give you.

If I understand you correctly, you're saying the only real affect a lens adapter would have against the HD stock lense of the HVX would be in terms of losing light and we'd have to compensate for that. But don't we already have that same problem when using them with the DVX? Or will it be that much more so with the HVX?

Thanks so much-
