Film Flicker Effect

I have seen this effect in many edits on here, and in other locations. It mimics the end of a roll of film look where things get over exposed. The film sort fo flickers with some red and orange and then a flash of white before goign to the next clip. I just wanted to play with it in FCP but am unsure what it is. Is it just a dip to color type fade? Thanks

This is the tutorial I used, and from the sounds of things you're looking for the same effect I was, as seen in a lot of skate/snowboard vids. Real easy to use and looks it sick, although it is kind of over-used now:

I uploaded a short clip to youtube that I made using this technique. Here's the link to it:

EDIT: The tutorial is for Premiere Pro, but it's fairly similar to FCP, you should get the idea

The flickers in that video look like they are just changing the white levels with keyframes. It's also pretty easy to do, I'm not sure the exact method in FCP but in Premiere you can go to the levels menu, and change the White-input value to 0 and that should make the whole screen white. By adding in a few keyframes that alternate between 255 and 0 you get that flicker effect.

If you don't want to completely fade out to white you can always just set the value a little higher than 0, and make the colors look washed out. Just play with it until you get the look you want.

For a cool effect you could try combining this method with the film-burn tutorial, and just lower the opacity on the overlaying "film burn" video so it doesnt completely take over the screen. That way you will get the orangey-red colors on the sides of the screen along with the white flicker. Just experiment with it a little, it's the best way to get better at editing :)
Not sure if that's exactly what you wanted to know, just tryin to help as best I can.

Happy editing,
Patrick
