Film Festival

I just sat through so many crappy short films today..

it blew my mind.. my school holds a film festival every year to show the work the students have done in their fifth term.

15 months at this school.. and the moronic people here still have yet to think..

"hey.. we are NOT shooting this for tv... it is going to be projected digitally... so lets shoot 60i!"

ugh... all the digital films looks liked pieces of ****.. if just one person had said to themselves.. lets shoot progressive.. they would have doubled there resolution.... and none of these films implored any form of de-interlace methods...

they all looked like a muddy mess of bland washed out colours and out of focus piles of junk. With any wide shot... especially in DV you need all the res you can get...

moving on... the films that were actually shot on 16mm and 35mm looked just as bad... someone must have decided to do an awful telecine transfer.. then do an even worse MPEG2 compression..

to me.. it would just seem logical to rent a 16mm and 35mm projector for the day the festival took place and run the actual cut film... would have looked immensely better.

Sorry.. I am just venting.. I expected much more care from the students at my school.. I didn't expect to see the shlock that I did.

note: not saying all the films sucked, about 80% of them did.. but the other 20% were quite well done, technical gripes aside.

visual presentation is part of the experience.. somehow people forgot that.. sitting through a nice looking bad film is at least better than sitting through an awful looking bad film..

end rant.

EDIT: I'd have to say, the things produced on this website are far superior to the garbage I witnessed. The People here inspire me more than any school. word.

Re: Film Festival

That's too bad. Even a 3 minute short can feel like an eternity. And how retarded about 60i. From what I've heard, sometimes people in film school don't take it seriously enough. At least that's what I've heard. If they want to do it for a living in the real world, LA for example, they'll probably get their asses kicked.

What school do you go to? How are the instructors?

Re: Film Festival

Loki,

This subject interests me a great deal as I'm working on a short that will be projected digitally. On of the issues that has me concerned is the use of a black pro mist filter. The main scene in this short takes place at a candlelit diner and the promist really makes the shot look very nice, at least on my monitor. I am, however, concerned about what that will look like once the sequence is "blown up". Any thoughts.

Re: Film Festival

A friend of mine, who is acting in my upcoming short, was recently in a Student film done at NYU (his son's roommate study's film there). The "Director's" father is a fairly well known television producer and no expense was spared on this student film, which was shot on 35mm - it sucked. It was almost unwatchable, no, it actually was unwatchable. I have to say, I was quite surprised.

Super Trooper [I think] posted awhile back he screened some of his footage via digital projector on a big screen and said it looked great.

Re: Film Festival

I'm sure it depends on what projector they use. I saw some shorts screened on a mid level projector and it was very contrasty.

Re: Film Festival

i screened my chinatown clip at an AFI theatre. **** it looked fantastic...the screen was big too

Loki - i feell you, i recently sat through a film festival and at the end I was sprawled out across two seats ready to vomit

Re: Film Festival

Even up here, I went to a festical that UAF holds every year. Whoo boy, most were crap, some weren't bad. Some had good story, bad cinematography while almost all the others had bad story even worse cinematography. But UAF is primarily a science school so I guess its okay. If you want to see some of them check out www.uaf.edu/filmclub look in the archives.

Re: Film Festival

Thanks Dakota, I was really thinking about how it would look blown up having used a diffusion filter - if it would make it too soft...

Re: Film Festival

Good question on filters. Not sure on the filters - Have never used. I see no reason for the image degrading. :-/
