Hi guys..

First of all .. I really feel good that I know this forum.

I using FCP4 and now I have to cut a 35mm short film at mu first time
so I wish to know that process of edit film in FCP4

now I have negative telecine Beta tapes. I using DV capture via DA converter.(DVMC-DA2)
what capture method should I using?
Should I reverse telecine in cinematool?
and what sequense preset do I have to use?

actually I tried capture 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal method and
I using rev-telecine in cinematool. then confirm 23.98
then my Edit track's sequence Preset is DV NTSC 48Khz - 23.98
Do I right way?

If I was right.. my clip has weird fliking(?) in videomonitor
and have field every 4th frame.. is it OKay?

Plaease answer to me...

thanks..

Re: Film edit in FCP4?

Sangbros. That's not the way to go for a 35mm to video transfer.

Did you get a database file from your transfer house? You will need this to save time if you are going to go back to a neg cut. It is also possible to manually create the file, but why bother when the teleciné does for you automatically?
Do you already have sync dailies, or will you have to do that yourself? It is much better to have sync dailes. If not, did they shoot with TC slate, or dumb slate?

2:3:3:2 won't work because most telecinés use 3:2 pulldown. 2:3:3:2 is a DVX thing.

Here's the basic workflow:

1 - Transfer 35mm film to Betacam at 24fps with TC + KeyCode Burn-IN. Use NDF TC! Have the colourist log scenes and takes - not just camera rolls. This will take more time now, but save you headaches in the rest of post.

2 - Get the transfer house to email you the teleciné log, and give you a backup on floppy. (I always get it emailed or burned to CD since I don't have a floppy drive for my G4) It will either be a .FLX, .ATN (Aaton), or .FTL (Evertz) file.

3 - Create a new database, and import the teleciné log into Cinema Tools. If your film was shot 4-perf (standard for printing back to film) then use the default settings for a new database. 30 frame video, 24 frame film, etc.

4 - Export a Batch Capture list from Cinema Tools.

5 - Import Batch list into FCP4 and capture clips at 29.97 fps. (Please make sure your TC is capturing frame accurately. You can double check it against the Burn-In TC.)

6 - Go back to your database in CT, and "connect clips."

7 - Reverse teleciné your clips to 24fps.

8 - Edit in FCP4 using a 24fps timeline.

9 - Export Film Cut list & VHS dub for your neg cutter. Export OMF for your sound mix. (Don't forget the 2-beep)

10- Neg Cut film, shoot audio mix to optical sound stock at lab.

11- Colour time first answer print.

12- Time second answer print. This is usually as far as I go for student films. The second answer print is usually suitable for festival screenings.

Let me know if you need any more help. I've had lots of experience as a film editor and 1st assistant, so I might be able to help.\

Re: Film edit in FCP4?

I appreciate for your reply.. Tim   ;D

I want to double check.
so I don't need 2:3:3:2 pulldown removal capture..
you mean Just 29.98 fps capture(basic capture) is Okay?
and rev-telecine to 24fps and confirm.
then edit 24fps timeline in FCP4...

however If did I capture 2:3:3:2 ? what kind of problem will be shown.. becuz... I already captured by 2:3:3:2...  :'(
if it cuz serious problem I have to capture 29.98 again..(If I need.. I will!!)

And.. what option do you choose when you rev-telecine?
(field1 or 2 and A, B, or AB, A_ something..I really confused with that... :-[ )

thank you again Tim..

ps: where are you Tim? actually I have been Vancouver Canada for 2 years...(from 1999 till 2001)

Re: Film edit in FCP4?

Yeah. You should redigitize your footage if you used advanced pulldown removal. Telecinés (in my experience) have never used the new advanced pulldown (although it is probably possible if requested.)

Batch capturing shouldn't be a big deal, just select them all and recapture in 29.97.

I assume you don't have a teleciné log from the transfer house - and you have already logged your dailies yourself. Do you have Keycode burn-in? This is essential if you want to conform a neg cut later.

When you reverse teleciné without a telecine log, you should do each clip separately. Open each clip and click the "reverse telecine" button. Use F1-F2 and tell Cinema Tools whatever frame is showing as the first frame of each clip (from the keycode burn-in.) A solid "A" is AA, solid "B" is BB, half B and half C is BC, etc. Leave any other settings at their default.

You should then manually type in the Keycode starting number for each clip. Then follow the rest of my instructions above (step 8-12.)

BTW, I'm in Toronto.
