Film Burn

I just recieved back some super 8 film I shot last month and had it put on miniDV. I get that film burn effect here and there throughout the footage. Just wondering what causes it. Is it when i shoot or when they develope and transfer the reel. I like the way it looks and would like to see it happen more often during the shoots.

Not sure why it would happen on super 8 film, as the cartirdges are daylight sealed, but it's usually caused by light leaking into the film reel and showing up around the exposed edges. Maybe some leaked into the viewfinder while you were filming too.

Did you get the "film roll-out" effect, where the footage changes funky colors then whites out, or did you get the "stuck in the projector gate" physical burning of the film?

The former will happen anytime you remove the cartridge from the camera and will be at the heads and tails of every roll. It can also happen as PDX DVX said, by bright light entering the eyepiece if you have a reflex camera. Most Super8 relex cameras use a beam splitter reflex system, which were set-up to minimize fogging or flashing from the eyepiece by ambient light, but it can happen. The effect is much more prevalant with mirrored shutter reflex systems. I think that the only mirrored shutter reflex Super8 cameras are the Beaulieus.

The latter is a situation with the transfer.Talk to the place you had do the transfer.

I love how every technical problem or defect with film is being recreated digitally. When I shot film, I was so careful about dust, scratches and any defects. I used to despair if a print got scratched or god forbid--a frame burned out. I nearly throttled a number of careless projectionists.
