Film Audio

I just had a quick question on Motion Picture audio, I hope it's not been covered before.

Audio was originally recorded optically on the side of the film, correct? Then there was a magnetic era, and then Dolby pioneered a new type of optical stereo method, and nowadays we've got Dolby digital, correct?
So how does Dobly Digital work? Also, where does the audio come from when shooting in a "super" format where the film frame covers the audio space?
and just one more question...
What exactly is the difference between a sync and nonsync camera?

Sorry if these questions are elementary, but I don't know much aobut audio and was just curious.
Thanks!
