Fight scene FPS

I was thinking about shooting at 22fps but then I heard about moving slightly slower and shooting a bit slower. Would this be done at around 20fps? Or even slower? 18fps? It is obviously going to be a matter of taste and testing but I'd love to hear from someone who's gone down to 20 or lower and hear if they were happy with the results

Are you planning on doing playback at 24 FPS? What about upping your shutter speed so it's a little more stroby?

Matthew

Stroby? I Wanted to get away from that. I was thinking about keeping the shutter at 1/60th at least. I want clear, but fast and believable. That's something to keep in mind for testing though... I'll set it to 1/43 and test but I think I might end up with something around 1/60th.

Most will depend on the performance of course but I was wondering about possibly allowing the talent to slow down a bit for more precise movements and added safety to a speed at which it would register well in 20fps... I thought about 18 too but I am not sure it that would start looking fake? Just looking for a good starting point, something that worked for someone else.
I remember the Bourne Supremacy behind the scenes had a bit of fighting and you could see their performance speed. I wonder what FPS they shot that at.

Well, if you want to keep away from having a strobe look, then you need to shoot a higher frame rate instead of a lower frame rate. Look at the old silent films that they shot at 12-15 FPS's--very strobeish. Whatever the case, I wouldn't go below 18 FPS as when you playback at 24 FPS, anything slower will be noticeable that it's speed up.

I would suggest doing the look in camera but due to your indecisivenesses when determining your fps, why not shoot normal and reduce frames in post to your liking?

Your shutterspeed can either be low for a blurred action look, or it can be very high for that crisp 'jarring' and 'jittery' feel. Either works well, and when done well doesn't scream VIDEO.

It's all about what style you want. The classic example of a fast (high) shutter speed would be saving private ryan.

60i with a 1/60 shutter is the best. You'll avoid strobing entirely. You don't need (or want) 24fps if you won't be pursuing theatrical distribution.

Whether or not to under crank and the shutter speed will be decisions that will have to be made for his fight scene and the style. Sure he could shoot 60i with a 1/60 shutter but only if he wants his fight to look like it was captured on an evening news ENG camera.

If he wants a more film like look, 24p does offer something regardless if he is pursuing theatrical distribution or not.

I really think that is bad advice.

I just did a fighting sequence for my upcoming short. I shot it at 20 fps w/ 60th shutter. Turned out brilliant. It has a lot to do with your talent's performance.
