FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

"Smell that? Smells like someone died."

(OK, I know it's not Val's line, but it reminded me of the original topic of this thread.)

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

No worries! Another great line.

Whatever happended to Michael Bien? HAs this dude gotten no respect at all from the industry?

Terminator
Aliens
The Abyss

Why is he doing stupid **** now?

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

I love the line when Billy Zane steps off of the stagecoach and Sam Elliot says:

"What the hell kind o' town is this?"

Michael Biehn is getting a little old to play his stereotypical Navy Seal type of character. But he's still in around 3 or 4 pictures a year, not big blockbusters, but hey, he's a working actor. 8)

A buddy of mine just got a part in a feature by Seth Landau (Martin's nephew). He films for 2 weeks in Arizona. Pretty cool.

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

That is cool.

Youre right M Biehn is still cool and working! (Im sure he's crying doing straight to vodeo stuff). ****, I like Billy Zane too! He was perfectly cast in Titanic.

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

Hey, wasn't this supposed to be about Fight Club? lol....

Personally, I think that movie was brilliant. Unbelievably flawless script. I think it was vastly improperly marketed because that movie should have done the numbers that the 6th sense did. Instead it was a flop at the box office. I blame this on marketing and moron’s like Rosie O’Donnel making disparaging comments about it without actually having seen the movie. She just assumed the story was about the fighting and violence because of the crappy marketing campaign. If I ever get my project sold, I hope I’ll have a voice somewhere in it to make sure marketing doesn’t drop the ball like they do on most films of late. Can you say “Confidence”? Another brilliant script and film ruined by bad marketing. ...sigh...

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

There's so much I could say about this film that... I prefer not. My uncotrollable lengthytite is already a pain in the ass for everybody (by the way, thank you for standing my logorrhea with such a stoic dignity, I appreciate), but if I start on the Fight Club topic, Dostoïevski will soon be considered as a short story writer.

I'll try to make it supershort. Two points :

1/ Fight Club is the only film of my adult life (above 20) which has truly changed my vision of the world.

2/ You Tylerists should urgently read the novel it was adapted from by Chuck Palahniuk (same title) as well as his other books : "Survivor", "Choke", and my favourite : "Invisible Monsters". I think Chuck's the new Rabelais, in a post-punk american version. I don't usually find the time to read as much as I should, but this guy sure makes me quit TV, DVD's, DVXuser.com or any other activity intended to distract myself from my real life and the painful metaphysical questions it triggers.

Yeah... like migraines : they would be so much more pleasant without that damned headache.

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

Rule number one is: You Don't Talk About Fight Club.

When "Palerider" was in here yesterday chalking up 36 posts in ~2 hours, much of what he had to say was antagonistic folly. And when he posted this antagonistic thread about "Fight Club," no one chose to take the bait. Personally, I saw no reason to defend a film that doesn't need defending. Plus, I love quoting Kilmer as Holliday.:)

Like Anartiste, I could write pages about the film/book. But there's no reason to. In essence, to me, Fight Club is an exploration into the fundamental dualistic characteristics of man and society e.g. what he is vs. what he was meant to be, who he is vs. who he wants to be or should be or could be, the direction in which society is going vs. where it should go, what society is doing to man vs. what man should do to/with/in society, etc. It's about living your life as opposed to sleepwalking through the lie of some well-trodden, safe, conventional path that leads to nowhere and kills your dreams and passions. It's about having an original thought as opposed to regurgitating bullsh1t your entire life. It's about the fall of man where we are, both in the beginning and eternally, the devil. But, we are the devil by choice, because on some level we know what we should do, yet we don't do it; we choose not to be angels.

If you haven't read the book, please read it. And read all of Palahniuk's stuff while your at it.

Anartiste, I don't know anything about Rabelais. Maybe I'll check him out.

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

Oh ! And **** ! I can't resist to add one thing :

When he's got a nasty disturbing subject to film, The Finch is a giant.

There's a scene in the middle of the film, when Jack (the character has no official name, but Jack will do it) is trying to be nice with Marla. They're at the verge of really communicating at last. And Tyler is downstairs in the basement, setting the dormitory for the army to settle soon. You remember that scene ?

If you don't, watch it, it's one of the most subtle pivotal scenes I've ever watched. There's everything here : subtext, irony, great acting... and an amazing mise en scène, very humble, hidden behind a sitcomish camera setting.

I've watched Fight Club a dozen times, and it's the scene I end up loving the most.

Too much talking about this masterpiece would only be mediocre paraphrasing, so this is my last post on this topic. If you didn't like it, my litterature won't make you change your mind ; if you loved it , it will not add to the emotion you had.

End of transmission.

I don't rent -- I buy! :)

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

I rent from Netflix, and have no complaints. It's a great service. There are lots of movies that I want to see but not necessarily have in my DVD collection.

"Fight Club" is definitely worth owning though. The special features are very cool, not the least of which is the entire collection of storyboards used to make the film.

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

Yeah, I sometimes run out to Blockbuster to satisfy an immediate "need" to see a new release but not that often. The key things about Netflix for me is "no late fees" and "no need to take time out going to the rental place;" I find it virtually impossible to return a movie on time and usually end up owing Blockbuster ridiculous late fees. I have around 55 movies in my Netflix queue waiting to be sent to me. I have a constant stream of movies moving through my house.

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

I usually just buy a disc if I want to watch the movie. If it's a clunker, I'll unload it somewhere. Most of time it works out, though.

I'll rent if there's a movie I want to see that I know I don't want to own (such as Matrix Revolutions, which I just watched for the first time last night).

Re: FIGHT CLUB- WHY THE HYPE?

I want to see "Matrix : Revolutions" to see how they end it. I think that it's a cool concept, but I've never been a huge fan of the whole "Matrix" thing. The second film, "Reloaded," was horrible.

What did you think of "Revolutions?"
