Field Monitors

I am trying to do some research on purchasing a good field monitor for the HVX. Is it better to go with a good solid SD CRT or is there a HD LCD that would be better then a crt? If any one has some good recomendations that would be great.

The only way you're going to get the proper colorspace (for lighting parameters) is with a properly calibrated HD-capable MultiFormat monitor like Sony's BVMD20F1U.

Now that many cameras in the CineAlta line (in addition to the Z1U and HVX200) feature a composite output for live confidence monitoring without the component hassle, I've also used 804xq series and 135xq series Sony SD monitors with underscan and blue only to tweak a rough approximation from the cameras NTSC bars.

For critical focus, many here also use 480 TV line monitors like the Marshall VR700HD LCD with acceptable results. It down-converts the incoming HD signal - there is plenty on this monitor on these and DVInfo's boards.

Panasonic's 8" BT-LH900 is excellent. I've used this in both SD on the jib with the HVX200 and F350 and in HD for EFP interviews with the F900. Awesome, but a little small and very pricey. It's great to thread a 1/4-20 to baby pin adapter on there and mount it on light stands or c-stands with an appropriate hood.

The Panasonic BT-LH1700 is decidedly not portable, but if you're on-stage and have a video village, it cannot be beat for the money.

I've used the Sony LMD9050 with the F900 and it had a great picture, but it depends on your needs and budget. Marshall makes some economical lcd's.

I've heard good things about the BT-LH1700 including the comments above. It can be rack mounted or carried separately and DC powered.

I also downloaded the brochure for the JVC DT-V24L1D. JVC offers 24 and 20 inch sizes with at least the 24 inch being native 1080P that is DVD-I/HDMI HDCP compatible for Blu-Ray playback. Must be expensive. The JVC news release said available 3 qrt 2006. Anyone familiar with this? Is it out yet? David.

I've been very happy with the Panasonic BH-1700...
with the Porta brace and a battery pack it is portable for a limmited time...(I also got a battery with AC out from Frys and I just put it on the bottom of the magliner)

but it has been a pain to have a grip hold it in front of my AC's on critical Foucus times...ecpecaily on a sweeping jib move... so I just got the Marshall with the Nebtech panasonic battary Plate...havent tried it out yet.. but also for run and Gun shoots where I still have complex dolly shots but just can't use the 17inch Im really hopeing it helps my AC's
