Field monitor... or DVRig on a laptop ?

Hi all,

The title says it all : should I rather get a field control monitor, or a laptop to run DVRig ?

Obviously, I shoot both indoors and outdoors, sometimes with ample camera movement (on a crane, for example). I specify this because it's easy to use a very long RCA video cable to plug into a monitor, wheras I'm not sure about very long Firewire cables...?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I don't get it?!

A DVrig on a laptop doesn't make any sense:

Unless, of course, you mean DVrack!!! :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

:dankk2: LOL...! You know, as I was typing my message, I kept thinking that something was wrong but couldn't figure out what... I guess my brain was not in gear... Tks for correcting me and for the hilarious image !

I did indeed mean DVRack !

good question...i'm thinking of getting DVRack myself...whats the longest firewire cables they have...is there maybe some sort of connector to join to firewire cables?

Here is your answer:

Q: What is the maximum length a FireWire (A) cable can be?
A: The maximum cable length for connecting device to device with a 400Mbps cable is 4.5-meters (14.85ft). The Firewire specification calls for 10 meter (32ft) cables that may be used in conjunction with a repeater when it is necessary to extend FireWire cables over long distances. FirewireDirect does not offer these cables at this time because tests have shown them to be unreliable in some situations. We suggest using 4.5 meter cables and hubs when needing to extend to greater distances and don't recommend 10 meter cables (if you can find them) to our customers.

Best,

Rob

Many thanks ! That takes care of the cable length issue.

Anyone else wanna pitch in as to the merits of DVRack versus a monitor ?

LMAO great pic!

Anyone out there who has used the DV Rack? Did it work for your? What about the laptop computer, any suggestions? I have just started looking into it. Have used a JVC monitor in the field in the past and tired of lugging it around. Getting older.

I have and use DV Rack (and now DVC Rack) and love it. At the same time, I still use a number of field monitors (one for the director and one for the script supervisor). I am using a modest laptop (2.4G, 384 MB RAM) and have not had any problems with its performance. Serious Magic offers a trial version that you can download and try. I doubt you'll choose to pass on it.

I'm confused about signals. So viewing a digital LCD with a firewire connection is a digital signal with RGB values. No? Connecting a CRT field monitor with a analog component cable has Y, Cr, Cb values. No? Would not the rendered image be completley different on the two different systems? Gamma, color space and all? So it would all depend on what you were designing for (RGB or 601) ???

no idea...but I would guess dvrack tries to simulate a real field monitor. It seems to be highly praised and plus I think bringing a laptop around instead of lugging around a field monitor would be better for your regular indie shooter.
Plus, you capture directly into your hard drive...now isn't that just superb? I truely need a laptop so I can get this. I wonder if it will support the HVX and RED in the future.
