Field Monitor Idea

I just started my new job in the Gamestop at the mall for some more cash. As I'm wandering the place later on, I see the small 7'' monitors that hook directly to the PSone or PS2, Xbox, etc... I didn't check if it used S-video or RCA plugs (which are NOT, as I have read a frightening number of times in the forum, component video. It's just Video, Left speaker, right speaker. Ok, rant over.)

I'll really have to get more hands on to see the exact resolution. I'm sure the originals, being for the 320 240 resolution PSone, are crap for serious work. But at about $300 to $400 with a possible s-video input on a new one geared toward Xbox could really kick a lot of ass on a budget.

I'm really looking for a field monitor I can light with, $500 or less. I need good color and decent resolution. I haven't gotten my DVX yet, so I don't know anything about the eyepiece or anything.

The whole reason I'm going with digital is so I don't need a DP running around with a frickin light meter, guessing what it will look like. I want the OMNIPOTENT POWER OF INSTANT SPONTANIOUS RESULTS RIGHT AWAY. NOW.

I should get a used monitor for a decent price. Maybe rent one but I'm sure the price to rent would be ridiculous. I hate the prices we have to pay for realistically cheap things. Production equipment prices are ridiculously bloated...

Re: Field Monitor Idea

They're selling nice 7" lcds with 16x9 support for headrests new on ebay for around $100.

I was thinking about getting one for my new magiqcam rig.

Re: Field Monitor Idea

Here's a link to the most decent game system monitor I've found-
http://www.joytech.net/gb/products/index.php?platform=11&product=52&x=30&y=8

at 6'' it's nothing to get sexually excited about, and they don't really offer true DETAILS.  But this is what I'm looking for- something pretty small, detailed with good coloring, and with a legitimate price.

Oh, and most important detail which I realized was not listed in product details-
16:9 support!! Gotta have it.

Re: Field Monitor Idea

the problem is, i'd like a monitor which also has a standard 1/4" female connection on the bottom of the monitor.

Re: Field Monitor Idea

The lcds I've seen on ebay have the RCA connector or the S-Video connector.

Re: Field Monitor Idea

to my knowledge only the Panasonic 7" comes with a 1/4 thread
to be mounted to a tripod or other support.

Re: Field Monitor Idea

and that's my problem w/ those lcd's you see on ebay...they're 800x480 rez but have no 1/4 20 mount on the bottom! anyone find a solution that won't break the bank, please let us know...thanks!

Re: Field Monitor Idea

500 bucks.....go to ebay and look at pro monitors, i got a sony pvm8045q for 650. its a crt, 450 lines
8" production monitor, and the most common monitor found on sets in nyc.

Re: Field Monitor Idea

if all you need is a 1/4 inch then you can by a t-mount at a at a hardware store and mount it into a a piece of wood to mount the LCD to.

Re: Field Monitor Idea

If you have a small laptop use "DV Rack" it serves as a monitor and WAY more! just an idea, thats what i am doing.

Re: Field Monitor Idea

I've been testing DV Rack, and so far I'm quite impressed.  Seems like really, really useful software.  Using the monitor next to my Panasonic BT-H1390Y, they can be calibrated quite closely, so that the field monitor of the DV Rack is actually very useful.  (I'm using a CRT on the computer, I don't know how it would look on an LCD laptop screen yet).  DV Rack would probably be worth the asking price just for the monitor and direct-to-disk recording capabilities alone, and then you get all the other goodies (waveform, vectorscope, etc) as well.

It'd take a pretty decent laptop to make sure it was running efficiently though.  I'm between laptops (just sent the old one off to college with my kid) so I don't have one to test with: how well does DV Rack work on a laptop as a field monitor?
