field mixers

Re: field mixers

One is designed to be used in the field for ENG/EFP productions the other is meant for studio or cart use.

One has balanced outputs the other does not.

One has useful metering for field video use, the other does not.

One has a built in field limiter, the other does not.

One publishes meaningful specs, the other does not (this is the one that matters the most).

That all being said, I still don't like the PSC for ENG productions. An extra $150 will get you an awesome mixer with the Mixpre.

Re: field mixers

OK, thank yoy wabbit. Any suggestion for a good field mixer?

Re: field mixers

ok ill say what wrong with every one of them
the first one is one of the worst spesifications i seow for something that amplifing sygnal for dyalog
no phanom power , mo monitoring from the camera , very poor mittering and its azden :-)- wasist of money -
the shure is a mono mixer - do you really need 6 input mono mixer , that run on ac power or 2 9v which would diy after 2-3 hours of use
this is sutelight room mixer or small viecle staright to the air mixer - not good for location work- 3 kg - thats 2 to much - not for you

ok , the last one is something useble - but !!!
very limitting to work with2 channels becouse you might find your self very fast need another channel- good pramps and limitter ,good monitoring
no line inputs and mike outs ( might be good for some wierless which need mike input only) , 10 db reduction when you use ph power
the boyj channels ganged with phantom -bad!!!!!!!!!you cant swich off one that you dont use , it might make some problems with hum on mikes which dont need phantom
only one headphone out , no individual lissenind for each channel
i call this one - very good add mixer - for someone who has something better - not something that good as the only one

my sudgestion is to look for used shure 33 ( dont touch 32a-troubles)in good shape on ebay , add some low cut filter barrel for themike ( the low cut on the 33 is extrimly hi)
and 10 db pad - or just find psc 48 ph box for your mike
allitle bit noicier option is old shure 32 ( not 32a) which can be some cheap substitut with 3 inputs

Re: field mixers

The Sound Devices Mixpre is far and away the best mixer there. Awesome preamps (infamous preamps), "unclippable" limiters, easy to use, all the needed extras, and built like a tank. The only downside is it only has 2 input channels which depending on what you are doing can be a problem.

The Sound Device 302 (3 channel input) is completely perfect (IMO) but a budget buster for some ($1200).

Good luck

Re: field mixers

Opps, got distracted by the wife and by the time I post it was just more or less redundent to oleg's post.

AVR,

As oleg said, pick one up used (ie ebay). I just did quick search and a shure fp33 is at $525 with one hour left right now, another one at $510 with 90 minutes left, and another one again in 2 days at $530. Heck I almost tempted to make a bid. Throw a mixbus on 2 of em and you got yourself a portable 6 channel mixer.

Good luck

Re: field mixers

While we are no this topic, what do you folks think of the Wendt 3X vs the Sound Devices 302?  Any huge difference?

I'm considering the Wendt since it has 3 channels and two XLR outs and it's cheaper.  However, the price difference is only $200 more with the Sound Devices, so if there's a compelling reason for paying more for the 302, may as well do that...

Re: field mixers

soundwise both are good , the sd have some benefi in flexabilitty on internal setings and some more fitchers and better limitters and mittering ( flexible)
the wendt has better pots and better battery life( more independent hours work) , since i didnt see the outs on wendt i cant say if that better , the 302 outs ( only one par of xlrs) is very limiting for 2 camera jobs
the wendt is most relible mixer that i know - most of the israelly renting companies hold it for years with people abused and they sorvive
my wendt 4 that i sold in 98 to a friend after 3 years working just fine without see any doctor even ones .

Re: field mixers

I find Wendt mixers to be terribly noisy, and succeptible to RF. When it comes to field mixers, Sound Devices are they way to go. If you are on a budget, then the PSC DV Pro Mix 3 is definitely a good way to go. I A/B'ed it with a Shure FP33, and they were comperable, so for me, the FP33 is not even an option any more.

Behringer mixers = I wouldn't mix my worst enemie's show on one of those. I had a customer bring one in that they wanted to run a 416 through and then right to their camera. It was so noisy it made the audio unusable. I couldn't believe they would manufacture such a bad product, and then have the nerve to sell it.

the psc is apease of **** in quality even they started to doo better qualitu control , but since i remember the f... alfa or waht its name ill never put a$ on these mixers
noice - you have to belive how sometimes they sounds dyrectly from the box
the good name that was to psc was becouse the wendt 4 mixer which was going under the psc name , since it left , so the reputation
if you want something relible for adjes the wendt is agood adress

Re: field mixers

Oleg, you must have lost some of your hearing above 15Khz, because every Wendt I've ever heard is noisy as hell.
