Field mixer vs. on board Pre's

Re: Field mixer vs. on board Pre's

Thank you Matt for all you do for this site. For my documentary use, I could spend $2000 less and have acceptable images but go to the DVX because nothing else does audio.

Re: Field mixer vs. on board Pre's

By the way, are there too much difference between Sound Devices Mix pre and the 302? In price... yes :o but justify the quality and extras?.
Thanks for all the people and the debates: I'm learning a lot ;)

Re: Field mixer vs. on board Pre's

Well, there are several big differences between the mix pre and 302 that more than justify the price.

The Mix Pre mic level in only, the 302's inputs are switchable between mic or line level. The 302 has the two main outs, PLUS a tape out/mix out on a TA-3. There is a mix in on a TA-3. There is also a line level return on a stereo mini with two small pots on the side, that can essentially make the mixer a 5 channel machine if you want to link a Mix Pre and 302. You have a seperate gain control, as well as your fader knob. The meters are more accurate. Oh, and you get a 3rd channel as well. Pretty damn amazing price considering what it does, and that a new Shure FP-33 is a few hundred bucks more, does less, and doesn't sound as good.

Re: Field mixer vs. on board Pre's

Thanks Dave, I've to take a decission before monday. In Spain I can obtain Mix Pre for 708 euros (868$) + IVA and the 302's for 1150 euros (1410$) + IVA (16%). Here, in Europe, we have to pay more. I don't understand. :(
So I've to decided. My job is fundamentaly documentaries with interviews (and run&gun situations) but I would like film a drama shortly . I not usually use more than two mics so I dont know if compensate buy the 302's. I'll notice the difference.
Thanks again. :)
