Field Dominance

Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right place for this post or not.

When I am working in FCP 7 I notice that some of my clips are "edgy" while others are not. If I change the field dominance to "none" it will usually make the clips look smoother, however the other clips that used to look fine are now edgy. If I de-interlace it smooths out but I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.

I've read that field dominance is suppose to be set to lower for DV stuff, but why is this making a difference? We have 3 DVX100Bs (2 are BPs), and I don't know which camera shot what, if it even matters. Some stuff is shot in 30p, other is 60i (I think, this i and p stuff still confuses me)

Can anyone help me out? I can take some screen grabs if that will help.

Well if some of what you shot is in 30p that means it is "progressively scanned" material and will not show interlacing artifacts because it isn't interlaced. 60i material is still displaying just 30 frames per second, but it is made up of 60 fields which alternate scan lines one after the other. This material is where you will see interlacing especially if you are watching it on a (LCD) computer monitor which is a natively progressive device.

Some of the progressive stuff I shot has the field dominance issue.

Some of my videos are targeted for the web (Youtube), those should be previewed on a computer monitor but the videos that are for a DVD should be previewed on television set correct?
