android.jpgHey,

i'm working on a female android in maya. I'm new to all this. Just thought I'd share. Not looking forward to doing the head. I want to make realistic facial features so I can rig and animate. Any advice?

Yeah, the most important thing is edge flow.

e.g google "3d facial edge flow". Edge flow is equally important for the body as well. You didn't show a wire frame of your model so I'm not sure where your at in that regard. Needless to say, facial modelling is tricker than it looks. Expect to lose a few hairs over it.

Yeah. It's really hard to keep the wireframes flowing and split into quads. My wireframes could use some work - that's for sure :)

Thanks. I found some great videos for edge flow. And some much easier techniques than I was trying to do.

Yeah, it takes a long time. A study of facial anatomy also might help. Just one of those things that you can spend a long time trying to perfect which you never really do.

There's lots of tutorials on http:\\area.autodesk.com on all sorts of tools and methods.

There's lots of things that can be missed while rigging that come up later when animating- which is always a bummer. Keep in mind things like naming bones, joint rotation order, and joint orientation. The Comet Scripts are good tools for that.

I think your female anatomy could use work. Her hips seem really small compared to her torso.

If your android has separate parts, why not consider actually making them separated? A good example of this is the Roboter rig. Check him out for inspiration. You can download him for free, but you have to create a login.

Thanks Rene. I decided to start with something a bit easier for my first try. I checked out some of the stuff you suggested. Thanks so much. And I'm also using digital tutors.
