Feeling misinformed...

I do not know FCP at all... My edit person says she is using the very latest version of FCP - as of August '09.
We are shooting AVCHD 1080-30p (HMC150). I had been giving her the Class 6 SDHC cards to copy data files. I only have (12) 16GB cards and she is slow at logging and transferring so now I make direct copies of each entire card burned to dual layer DVDs. I do run over to a second disc if the card has more than the 8.+ GB disc capacity. I also made copies to my own PC. She now says we cannot use a mix of cards and discs in the project. This according to "FCP User Manual Volume 1: Setup, and Input" which I do not have. I use Vegas 9 and have seen no problems using this method.
So here is the issue;
This means I will need to burn another 18-20 discs to cover what the editor has already copied from cards.
So the question is;
Is there any difference between memory card data and that same data burned directly to DVD or HDD as seen by FCP?

To me DATA is DATA. Certainly if this were rendered video I could see the point.
Am I actually misinformed here?

I have the next to latest version of FCP.
But all of my experience with that version tells me she's 100% wrong.
You copy the data to a hard drive and use it.
If you're using Log and Tansfer you may need to make sure you have all of the card copied - not just MTS files for example, but the whole card. But as long as you've copied the card and not changed the directory structure, FCP doesn't care if it's on a hard drive, SDHC card, CD whatever. It's just taking those files and mushing them into a quicktime movie which it stores in your capture folder.

Your workflow is a little odd though. Most people copy everything (because data is data) to 2 hard drives (1 for backup), and you'd normally just be giving her a hard drive with a folder for each card you shot.

Right. If she is trying to L&T, it may be an issue. But the files should be accessible through the import function.

Thank you for the quick info. We will switch to external drives. I am glad we do not need to ship them back and forth.
The DVDs will continue to be burned and used as off-site backup.

:dankk2:

I shoot on 16gig cards, copy the complete folder into another folder identified by date. I use a bunch of portable usb hard drives. I do this twice on different drives just in case and then transfer all those folders to another drive on my system. They always work. If you keep the integrity of the "Private"folder intact and identify it by storing it in another folder it shouldn't matter what media it is stored on. I just finished L&Ting over 40 hours this way last week. I plan to store my camera raw files on a bluray in the future using the same process of identification.
So my guess is your editor is mistaken or perhaps misunderstands the process.

Good info here as always...

Keeping this particular editor happy? Oh! I learned that lesson well when I had to have my head stitched back on after someone played with a camera's scene files.
So I have added "set all defaults" to our camera checklists.

Sometimes I wonder who is working for who around here.... :huh:
