Feedback Wanted on a New Filmmaking Initiative for Social Good...

Dear Fellow DVXUsers:

Would you be willing to either donate or offer at a substantial discount a limited amount of your time to a worthy non-profit or social good organization?

I am looking to put together a global network of film & video professionals who are willing to pool their time, skills, and resources to create short films, viral videos, and PSA’s for worthy non-profits and social good organizations.

Sounds crazy? Perhaps - but my gut tells me that there are some of you out there who just might be willing to to entertain the idea. Here’s why:

Some of you, like myself, already give a certain amount of your time each year to various causes and organizations, which is a good thing. However, sometimes these projects are pushed to the back burner, or for example, a project gets shot, but then has to wait months till time is available to edit, etc. Therefore, by taking on these projects as a team, each of us will know upfront exactly how much time we are required to commit to complete our role (eg 1 day of shooting, 8 hours of editing, 20 seconds of motion graphics, etc). At the same time, both we and the organization we are working for can feel confident that the project will be completed in a reasonable amount of time.

To make this happen will obviously require a certain amount of infrastructure and organization (eg FTP, file sharing, scheduling, etc.), and for the last 6 months we have actually been working on putting together all of the pieces necessary for effective online project management and collaboration.

Although this is an initiative to which I am strongly committed, it’s ultimate success will depend solely on the willingness of others to be involved. For those that do, I believe there will be many benefits, such as:

1) The personal satisfaction that comes from helping worthy non-profits and organizations raise more funds and do more good, which ultimately makes the world a better place for everyone.

2) Expand your business and professional network which inevitably leads to more, bigger, and better paying work down the line.

3) Build you portfolio, hone you skills, and try out new techniques.

4) The organization at the very least will cover your out of pocket and travel expenses, and in some cases be may even be able to pay a certain percentage of your regular rate.

If this sounds like something that may interest you, please respond to this thread with your area(s) of expertise (eg producing, shooting, editing, graphics, etc), and tell us in what part of the world you are based. Also, please feel free to share any thoughts or feedback.

Cheers,

Michael
