I'm just pulling your leg John. ;D

Re: FEBRUARY DVXfest DISCUSSION

Damn. Really good shorts for this contest. Need to watch them again before I vote.

Re: FEBRUARY DVXfest DISCUSSION

... well, no, actually the time limit is a serious issue, we'd declared a max of 5 minutes.

Hadn't we?

Re: FEBRUARY DVXfest DISCUSSION

We did; we did. I thought it was a guidleline. As in "How long?" "Well... Not 35 Minutes!". Honestly thought twice about it and thought "I think they would be stoked with showcasing more...."

Suddenly, I am the asshole.

jk... i dont care either ways... you could have made it 35 min and I still would have watched it and counted it part of the fest... but then again i only have 2 gold stars next to my name... so noone listens to me. :'(

Re: FEBRUARY DVXfest DISCUSSION

John, we're just going to have to take your film away from you, recut it, and give it a happy ending, like Sid Sheinberg did with Terry Gilliam's "Brazil" when Gilliam's cut came in over the contractual running time.

I remember back in film school, sometime in the early 20th century, I turned in a short film, the running time of which was 14 minutes, about 6 minutes over the professor's 8 minute running time rule. The prof looked at the large reel of film -- noticing it was clearly longer that was allowed -- then turned to me and asked how long my film was. "14 minutes," I replied. "Well how did that happen?" was his response. Rather than throttling him as was my first instinct, I think I said something to the effect of "that's how long it needed to be."

So I totally get where you're coming from, John. That said, as someone who cut his Feb. film down to five minutes (actually 4:59) to comply with the contest rules, I say you must be punished. Tarred and feathered, damn it, or perhaps fed to the zombie girlfriend!;) Or... Or... crewing for free on everyone's next movie. Without even meals or copy provided!:o

I think working within certain restrictions is part of the challenge and fun of the contests. Using your logic, someone could have made a movie not featuring a heart-shaped box of chocolates, thinking the need to include such an item was merely a guideline.

My ultimate point... hell if I know. I guess what I'm saying is that as a fellow contestant in this month's competition, I don't in the least mind that your film ran over (didn't even notice till someone pointed it out, and in fact, I enjoyed the hell out of the flick... then again, I'm a sucker for all things zombie ;D), but I think for future contests, the time limit should be enforced... at least until I enter a film that's over five minutes :D

Re: FEBRUARY DVXfest DISCUSSION

John - I'm more concerned with the story and quality of your film than the time. ;D  I can't compete with that! It's a clever story and a fine looking flick. (I wish I could get my DVX to do what yours does.) You should be proud of what you and ExFilms made and be happy the only real complaint has been its length. Take a look at what I said about The Morning After. Be grateful you weren't on the receiving end of that flogging. (FYI: I have a deep respect for antOmic and we are actually good friends. Although he never returns my calls.)

I think we can all agree that if you win it would be WELL deserved. (Look at the praise you've received.) We are all family here (the DVXuser family) so, for me, this isn't anything but a "Hey, I thought...". If this were another contest then they'd be more strict. But this is a contest among friends.

Good luck and congratulations, you just hit #9000!!!!  :D

P.S. Thought you might be interested in this story about a teenager arrested for writing a zombie story. Where are we headed?

No worries -

3:55 - John Hudson Entry
3:55 - ExFilms Entry

Technically you are each 1 minute, five seconds UNDER the guidelines...

Re: FEBRUARY DVXfest DISCUSSION

:D Im digging it everyone; damn it.

"I thin kthe film would be better if shortended... Hey!  Its 7 minutes! Bastids!"

In the future, I will respect the guidelines handed down; irony being that it would be a much better short if it was cut down; i.e. I can honestly say I am not benifitting from the length, right?

Sigh...

I just needed to be that long!  :-[  :-/  :'(

That's why they call them "shorts". ;D

But, yes. I for one am serious about the time limit. Rules are rules. We all gave Dave Greeches a hard time about cutting his down to 5, and he did it. And in my original review, I stated that this could have been trimmed to 5 and still be just as entertaining.

I don't buy into the "it just needed to be that long". That's a bad excuse. When you comply to rules, even as hard as they may be to do, it forces you to be more creative with your storytelling. And Stas' teacher should have held him to that too, especially because he was a student still learning.

But Hud and Ex...the length being my only critique, I am only stating beliefs in the contest rules. I think it's great you guys entered, and I certainly would not petition to disqualify you. A lot of effort goes in to the making of all of our films, and I applaud each and every one of us for doing something. (even if some of us have to pull rank around here) ;D cheaters :P

;D ;D ;D

Re: FEBRUARY DVXfest DISCUSSION

;D LOL I was hoping disturbing your sleep would throw-off your schedule and prevent you from entering the contest this month. Boy was I wrong.
