Feature Film DVD Cover (need input)

That was my thought too about the front cover ... looked flat. And that Papyrus font is really grabbing me for the title ... or at least tweak it some more in photoshop so it doesn't look like it's just pasted ontop of the image. Also go with more specs on the back, if you want it to look industry standard.

Here's a cover I just did for my zombie short from the fest, that I'll be giving to my cast ... it's by no means pro either, but you'll see what I mean by the specs on the back ... this was a rough draft, but similar to the final.

Spidey... Is that your idea of constructive criticm?

uhrg...I'm open to suggestion so, I'll give it a shot and let you know what I come up with thanks.

I agree with Gabe. It looks really flat and washed out. I would really play with the contrast a bit and tweak your levels. You want that front image to jump at people, because let's be honest, people do judge a book by it's cover, and people do just a movie by the box.

I like the shadowing on the pictures on the back, but it still looks washed out. It's all about that first impression when you go to sel anything.

I agree littlbe bit washed out, could do with more contrast.

But over all I like the design, the only thing that seems to bother me is the text in the centre on the front cover, (Wanted ... etc).

The stroke around the text seems to bring the "pro" look down a notch.

Just my 2 cents.

Oh and at the top "WIDESCREEN EDITION" I would set the tracking higher for this, thus spacing the letters further apart of each other, they look a bit cramped.

Could be wrong.

thanks,
Derrick

Just my op -

Make the colours more saturated, especially the blue and red on the wall/background (for separation).

The "Vigilantes" font should be thicker, or bolder. It seems too delicate for the cover.

The tag line on the front just doesn't work (style not content). It should meld into the setting, or use a different font/placing. It distracts from the characters on the cover, and doesn't feel like the rest of the cover. IMO, it should be more unobtrusive, maybe feathering?...It's hard to give advice, when I don't know what you're going for but...

Hope that helps.:)

Cheers.

im sorry it made me luagh though so iddnt know that was bad. it just atm looks like something thats straigh t dvd at bbuster

I don't think it's too bad off. I didn't laugh at it! I probably would pick it up if I saw it at blockbuster... eventually. I think you need to put something a little catchier on the front. It's just too plain and bright for me. But that is me, I like the dark, contrasty covers. It just looks more quality.

You guys have no idea how much you've helped already... THANKS.

Spidey - This movie is an Action/Adventure with lots of comedy but I didn't figure the cover would make someone laugh :) ... anyways, I've read a lot of your postings and have learned quite a bit from ya, so no hard feelins... I've basically started this project from scratch with practically no budget and a small - Know absoultely nothing crew (including myself) so I've been doing everything myself. Can't afford the help anyone with experience wants to give me in the Sacto area and everyone else is too busy. took me a long time to do the cover, so my immediate react was - Back to the Drawing board - still appreciate your input though, man.

Derrick - I've aleady adjusted the widescreen text, and am playing around with the placement and look of the wanted text as well - Great suggestions... Thanks.

D and G - Totally agree... I'm workin' on makin' that Vigilantes title stand out more. Your description was perfect too "DELICATE"... that's the last thing I want... Thanks.

Tankgirl - I definetly don't want the cover, nor the movie to be bright... My original vision was to keep it on the dark side, cause the movie centers around homeless kids (Squatters actually) got plenty of them in my fam. so I came up with the idea. But I do want it to be dark (so I'll go back to work on it) I know a lot of people comment on things being too dark, so I guess I was being overly cautious.

Thanks again everyone... If anyone here is photoshop savy, maybe you wouldn't mind taking the design and showing me an example of how you would contrast the cover or make it stand out... I don't really have anyone in my area to help me out with this(sob) so I have to learn everything I'm doing from books, or online (I mean everything guys... shooting, editing, special fx, design work, everything...)

Thanks to all

p.s. Can anyone tell me how I can get my images posted in my thread, so people don't have to go to the links?

After looking back at the picture on the cover, I'm also just not a huge fan of the image. It doesn't really match the whole flavor of the title. Honestly, I think it's a little breakfast club looking.

Normally when it comes to cover designs I like things that are very minimalistic. This could just be my opinion, but I want something that makes you hungry for what's inside but doesn't reveal anything more. A couple of great examples, in my opinion, of some great cover art include:
Pi (just the symbol)
Fight Club (the bar of soap)
From Dusk to Dawn (the overlay of the faces)
American Beauty (Rose Petal)
A Bronx Tale (two faces with boy in the middle)

The goal is to show something. If you're not even done with shooting for a while longer then you should have time to come up with a more creative solution. For example, based on the title... I would think of something like a sock with a bunch of pennies falling out of it with a little blood at the end of the sock on a black background.

I'm not familiar with your story, but as of right now, from a potential customer who would look at the box, I would have no desire to pick it up and give it a go.

I'm not trying to be harsh. Hope I didn't come off that way.

Wow, Yankee, what a jerk!

Kidding! Great advice, and I'm the same way about less is more. Same with with my editing, etc. ... my goal is to always leave them wanting more ... not lacking in anything, but to never have something say too much because it's then ... well, too much.

Yankee -- Very well stated and not harsh at all... I'm going to kick around other ideas while I implement suggestions from other dvxers for the current design. "Breakfast Club" that's classic... I'm really starting to see that now every time I look at cover.

Envision - Thanks again for keeping on top of this... I really do want a great looking cover so you checking up on me time and again would be a big help. I've seen some of your work. Great stuff, man. appreciate the feedback.

These might be the baddest mofos I've ever seen.

I think this may be what Spidey was laughing at. Less is definately more  This is almost funnier than PK"s asian cigarette smoking gang. Is that dude on the left taking a crap or what?

This reminds me of some 80's B movie action film with Rap stars as the heros.

LOL. Honestly I think it looks good except for the guy who looks like he's taking a crap.

Looks like an interesting movie.
