Fear of Flying

Como's back. back again
Anyone have a fear of flying?

I've flown quite a bit in my lifetime, and I've always had a small fear. It used to be big, where I didn't even want to go in the plane.....But now I'm ok with it, but still a little freight..

Ever since I got back from my California trip, I've had 6-7 dreams of a planes crashing. Me being in the plane, and outside of the plane.

I read about it on the net, and I think it's cause I'm going to Florida this weekend, and I'm having the dreams cause I know I'm going in a plane soon, so it's my head messing with me.

OR is this a final destination 4 :(

I love flying - big and little planes - never had any fear, just sheer excitement.

I do however have a very strong fear of heights. More like a fear of falling off of them. Can't get within 10 feet of the edge of anything high unless there's some sufficient railing. So I feel for you on that though - not much fun doing things that strike that kind of fear into you and others can do with ease. Glad its getting better for you at least. The best thing I can do for myself in those kind of situations is to just keep reminding myself of all of the people around me that arent afraid. Still sucks though. Am lucky to have a wife that isnt afraid of 10 ft of scaffolding...

Dude, that's what I did!

On the way home from a trip, I had like 4, 5-10 year olds surrounding me. One was actually 3.

For some reason, that made me feel better...I guess knowing that a parent wouldn't put their kid in danger, so I was relieved haha.

Little things like that can make the trip easier.

I might just take a pill and pass out or somethng...

Another thing I look at is the stewardess' working there. They do it every day. And the pilot!

Just remember...you're safer in an airplane then you are in your own bathroom.

.....unless you slip and fall in the tub!

Statistically, you are at more risk driving to the airport. The amount of planes that crash every year are exceptionally low compared to the amount of just daily flights even.

I'm ok on the planes but I can get pretty scary on ski lifts now. It just changed when I was 30, just like overnight. Before I was ok. Now I just can examnie my fear and compare it with what was before and I must say sometimes its pretty strong and overhelming. My brain knows that everything is ok but suddenly then will come that freezing fear and I cant do anything. Now I understand to all who fear of sneaks, spiders, etc. No fun anymore.
But dont forgot that fear is natural thing.

I'm the same as Jeff somewhat in that I'm afraid of heights. I, for some reason, lose my perspective and then tend to lose my balance. I'm lost as to where I am positioned.
If I even imagine, and I do very often, just looking over the edge of a building, that's it. My system starts reacting.

Planes however, I love. I've been in a few jumbos and one prop job flying over tree tops in the Yucatan jungle and I was in the window seat, and 'leaning' more trying to get closer to the trees. What a rush. That I loved.

But put me on a building ledge? I'm as good as dead, cause I'll be doing the swawn dive, haha. Funny how that works though.

Yeah, I'm not fondof heights either, for example looking over the Hoover Damn last year kinda freaked me out.

As far as flying, I wouldn't say it is fear more the occasional times where I'll have a lot of anxiety, this happened a few years back it it freaked me out a little. I think what gets me is the fact that I'm not in control of the situation, and your putting control in someone elses hands. There is also the fact that flying is just not a natural thing for humans. I've gotten better and it doesn't really bother me anymore, just fly back from Vegas on Thursday and was fine. Landing is never usually a problem, but taking off is just so unnatural for me, that only lasts 5 minutes though.

For the Canadians on here, how many of you guys watch Mayday? That show is great. Majority of plane crashes are a series of small errors that escalate into bigger and bigger ones. That being said, it takes a lot of things to go wrong for a properly working plane to crash.

Well, my dad was an aircraft mech at a few airbases in Canada since the big WW2 and had to sign off on them as ready to fly. He never lost one. So fear of flying, er, crashing, has never been an issue for me. If anything, it's the 'ear popping' during takeoff, that bugs me.

Mayday, never seen that but will look for it. I love the History Channel's Dogfights series. There's a spit vet in town here that flew in WW2 and was part of the Great Escape, helped dig the tunnel and everything. Lives about a mile from me. How cool is THAT? hehe. Pretty fkin cool man.

Little ol Belleville. Who would have known? haha.

Mayday is great, it's on Discovery Channel, it basically renacts plane crashes (or near plane crashes) and has interviews with passengers, pilots and the NTSB investigation team, telling what went wrong. There are so many episodes where it's one small little thing, which adds to another problem and so on until disaster. I remember I was flying back home a few years ago and was watching Mayday on a West Jet flight, there was this kid sitting beside me that was freaking out watching it.

Not sure if you remember but there was an Air Transat flight that left Toronto, that ran out of fuel half way over the Atlantic, the Pilot basically turned it into a glider and ended up landing it in the Azores, happened a few years back. That was a great episodes. And there was also the plane crash at Pearson a few summers ago where it went of the run away and landed close to the 401, the did an episode on that.

I love the History Channel's Dogfights series.

So do I, it's fantastic.

Thats wild, pretty cool.

I grew up next to an airport so every summer whenever the Snowbirds would come to town, they'd be practicing and buzzing our houses, I've got found memories of sitting out on a very rural road and having jets scream over top of us, that was so ****ing cool.

Read about how Neil Armstrong landed on the Moon and than tell me about fear of flying. Sooo scary.... It was amazing what they did back then. Respect.
