FCS - Stuck in 32bit Limbo for a while?

This Ars' Technica article offers up a vast & detailed look at Snow Leopard from a developer's POV and gives much developer insight to why Apple's latest release for Final Cut wasn't the big rebirth into 64Bit we all were hoping for and expecting.

Page 6 specifically speaks of QuickTIme X Vs QuickTime 7. It also highlights that FCP is so closely integrated with QuickTime, that we are unlikely to see a 64Bit version of FCP until QuickTime X is fully developed an adds the same kind of pro features we now have with QuickTime 7.

While they are of the same name, the two are completely different code and X has only been developed far enough along to handle consumer based features. This is why 7 coexists with X on Snow Leopard and probably will for some time. QuickTime 7 has been around in it's current DNA since the early 90s.

That's kinda like Ford's Crown Victoria who's chassis can be dated back to 1978 and is only being phased out this year. Both have been dependable workhorses in their respected fields and have lived much much longer then their peers. ( maybe this should include a Brett Farv analogy too ) But times are changing and while folks can say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"... you also end up with a product that just way behind the times. Causing you more struggle as you rush to catch up & compete with the new class. Problem is some things worked so well, that it's sometimes hard to move on and finally let them um "retire".

Well, shoot. I could toss film into that batch too.
