fcpx won't open project files on another drive

Somehow project files of feature film seem to be gone from laptop drive, they're backed up on a usb drive but when I try to open them they say "must open in fcpx" but they don't show up on the fcpx project files. just shoot me...

You need to give us more information.
Which files are missing? Was the project made on that computer? Did you then move anything in the finder? How did you make the backup to the USB drive.
FCPX only sees two directories and only when the structure is correct. These directories on your "laptop" drive would be in "Movies" and be "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects".
Are these directories on your USB drive (which has to be Mac-Formatted also!). Or did you just drag stuff over, in which case the backup might be useless......depending on how you copied.

All on same computer. I started the project using the internal drive, but then copied to a back up usb drive.
File is in Movie folder .
file is called " CurrentVersion.fcpproject" and I thought I had moved the files correctly, but given the inability for fcpx to see them I may have made a mistake. So I have to recut an entire feature film?

Is this correct? You took the files from one drive and placed them on another and completely removed them from the original location?

I believe so. I would never have intentionally deleted them, but perhaps when I was deleting older material I highlighted the wrong project without realizing it. Only thing I can think of. I had backed up the original files and the event and project files, but fear I may not have moved them properly. The file I need the Currentversion.fcpproject I have on other drives, but if I double click on it it says "must be opened in fcpx" and there doesn't seem to be a way to do that. I guess that's the best way to put the question. Can I open a "project" file on another drive in fcpx?

Sorry I was away a while. Is this still valid..?

Anyway your problems sound like a few I get from one of my FCPX-pupils. Total mess. It is not recommended to move things around outside of FCPX until you are absolutely sure what you do. And if, then always make sure you have the stuff working in its new location before you delete in the old location….

If you have the current version.fcpproject you could create a new project and then overwrite the fcpproject file in there with the one you have backed up. Then probably all media appears offline ,but you can relink project files (that´s done in the Menu-File) or you reset the event-link in the inspector (select project in project browser and in inspector under the info for the project select an event that carries the media).

I have once lost media. On my first project in July 2011. Since then I have never ever lost a file in FCPX. So if you start understanding the structure (which is in fact not very complicated) you hopefully avoid this stuff in the future…..
