FCPX on new partition w/o an OS???

I just created a new partition on my main drive, so it want it to have FCPX there, and FCP7 on the main drive under Lion. Since I already have Lion, and the APP store won't let me download it again for the partition, I'm wondering if my partition needs the OS, or if I can just put FCPX there alone without an OS.

I plan to produce projects in FCP7 for the multicam and bring the same project into FCPX for color correction, green screen, etc.

Thoughts?

Also, BTW, I don't think you can share projects from FCP7 to FCPX...(hopefully) yet.

Thank you. How do I install lion since I already have it installed and the app store won't let me download it?

I'm pretty sure you can extract the installer DMG out of the files downloaded from the app store.

App Store had a known bug. Apple has even posted a KB page about it. Move previous version of FCP X to trash, go to App Store, Purchased tab, click "Install".

I just installed FCP studio and then installed FCP X and motion 5, they all work happily on the same drive

Putting Final Cut Studio and the FCPX apps on the same partition will muck up Compressor 3.5. You can still create and save batches, but you can only render in Compressor 4.

OK, here's the deal. FCP 7 and FCP X do not share any resources, they can live on the same drive just fine. The problem is that you can't have two apps in the Applications folder with the same name, and the Final Cut apps will look for their sister apps on the root level of the Applications folder.

Installing FCP X (Motion 5, Compressor 4) as part of the installation process creates a folder called Final Cut Studio and puts all of the FCS3 apps in that. Everything will run just fine, until one of the Studio apps tries to access one if it's sister apps. It will look in the root level of the Applications folder, not in the Final Cut Studio folder. Thus, FCP 7, Motion 4, etc, will look for an app called "Compressor" at the root level of the Applications folder, find "Compressor" 4, and launch it, but not be able to interact with it. That, is the only problem.

You can create a folder in your Applications folder called Final Cut X, and move FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 into it, and move your Studio apps back out to the root level, then they can interact with each other and not have any problems.

But the two sets don't really share any resources, so there's no danger there. Just round-trip issues, that's all.
