FCPX changing media-name

I dont know if i changed anything but since a few days when i import media into FCPX, it's changing the media-name from camera-naming to something like this: "2012-12-20 23:30:00". its not only in FCPX but in the "original media" folder too. Anybody know how to change this back to the original media-name? Happened when importing media from canon 60D and from sony fs700...

I think when you "copy or move the footage" on import it renames it. But if you don't check the boxes it leaves the media it is importing where it is.

FCPX renames clips when you use the import from camera feature.

Fortunately you can rename the clips, or better yet just use metadata tagging for everything.

Kyle,
If you want try this program. http://pika.dk/?p=406
What it does is rewrap your MXF canon files into .mov files. From there you can drag your converted (rewrapped) clips into FCPX and have your file names intact. Drag, don't import.

AWESOME FIND!!!!

This not only allows the import without renaming, but it allows you to create both proxy AND optimised media (something the Canon plugin doesn't allow) AND the retiming with optical flow WORKS, whereas on the Canon imported footage it doesn't (it merely repeats frames).

The only gotcha with this is that you can't see the footage displayed in icon mode in the importer OR import small sections of the source file - it's all or nothing.

Oh well, still no perfect solution, but this is a very helpful little utility! THANKS!

Sadly, I just realised that all the timecode is stripped from the files, so this makes it pretty useless to me :(

Select all the clips with incorrect names in the Event Browser, all at once.
Go to Modify > Apply Custom Name > Original Name From Camera.
Poof, done.

Am I correct in thinking there's no way to import the MXf's in FCPX without it rewrapping the files to .mov and then copying them to the event folder instead of in the original place my .mxf's are? It's annoying to dig in there, pull them out, put them in the proper folders, etc.

Thank you Mr. Balser! Your knowledge sharing is highly appreciated.

Version 10.0.6 brought MXF plugin support.

Just a quick trivia FYI for the batch rename technique I posted here, that has been around from the start. What's new in 10.0.6 is the "preset in the menu" to go back to the camera's original file label. But even before 10.0.6 you could make your own custom renaming preset for it. The original camera name metadata was never lost, that data was always kept in the Event database.

This still doesn't fix the problem overall though. This changes the name within FCPX but the real issue here is it's making the .mov's I import from MXF then putting them into the original media folder of my Events. I can change the name from within FCPX with the method you described but the name of the actual file on the HD is still wrong. This would be a problem on a large project or feature...having to rename all the files manually.

If having to refer to the physical media in an Event folder is necessary then yes, that is something you need to fill out the feedback page about (File menu). But I personally have never needed to do that. I have requested that FCP X not change the names at all. I'm sure this will get changed in one of the upcoming updates in 2013. Minor point really, doesn't stop me from doing my work.

Then use that free MXF converter I posted so that the names are correct in FCPX and on HD.
