Fcpx 10.08

Really wish they would add native raw support for the BMCC, similar to RED. Love being able to control the raw controls for RED footage right in FCPx.

Yeah that's a good idea. Personally I want to be able to arrange my workspace as I see fit. One of the things I love about Premiere. In fact if I could do that and they allow me to tell the software to replace one clip with another manually, I might call this NLE "mature". We're almost there...

Kind of curious what the verdict is on the FCPX now since it's first introduction and all the drama about it. Has it improved enough that people have moved to it from FCP7 or Premiere Pro?

When I tried it a while ago I liked the interface but got really frustrated I couldn't import the m2t files from my HDV camera that I had captured with PremierePro on the PC. FCPX didn't seem to have the file support I was loooking for. Has that changed?

M2t has never been Mac friendly. It's not a FCPX problem you're having there.

I can import them just fine on PPro on my macbook. I assume you mean not Apple software friendly. But to me that seems ridculous. Pro editing software should be able to handle nearly any kind of A/V file you throw at it. A lot of my job involves converting odd file types for clients. More so in the past than now. But I've been working with creative suite on PC for that. The mac is my personal machine.

If that were the case, we wouldn't need a million converters to get footage into pro editing software. It works fine in Premiere because Adobe built it to take almost all formats natively. M2t is not a reliable editing codec and that could be the reason FCPX doesn't like it.

Sorry to bug in off tangent, but does anyone know if I can regenerate proxies from original media?
I didn't do a camera archive, misguidedly in search of one missing media file I did a "locate proxy command and copy to to folder" that's knocked out
12 proxies. I couldn't relink so I switched to original media but now I have a missing clip.

I'm an idiot, sorry. My errors:
I'm running out of space so I didn't copy my SD Card footage and store it.
Didn't do a camera archive. Moved a lot of Old Event and Projects off my portable drive to create space but FCP X is still referencing them.
I don't care about that as much now, I just want to know if its possible to regenerate proxy files without having the SD cards.

The one clip that's missing, luckily I can go re-shoot. Thanks for your help.

I'm a little disappointed X still can't recognise c100 footage as being progressive in 10.0.8, maybe it's a canon problem they need to release a firmware update for.

And I agree, nobody should be trying to edit M2t files without a careful transcode, it's a transport codec.

FCPX is all you need in the way of an NLE, I've used 7 since version 1.2 and before that Avid and premiere, I have PP on all my macs as it comes with creative suite but whenever I've tried it, I've found it unreliable. I use AE PS and Ill in most jobs I do so I have nothing against Adobe, but I love the way X works and going to premiere now seems like a big step backwards.

I took the plunge a few months ago. I had a project with lots of fast cuts and figured FCPX would be quicker than FCP7, I was up and running straight away and apart from the now resolved plugin bug I haven't looked back. I'm running it on a quad core Macbook Pro with a 480Gb SSD and 16Gb ram working with Prores 442HQ files and it flies. I do have Premiere too but haven't felt the need to try it.

It's a LOT better than it was. But I still (personally) don't like it much. I really prefer track based editing still, and it's not because I haven't given this a shot. I'm pretty young and love learning new software and concepts but the trackless editing forces what to me is a less natural and more annoying way of editing.

And there's still a ton of problems in the details: can't drag filters from one clip to another, the color board is still annoying, the program lags and is sluggish far too often on larger projects (12 core mac pro, gtx 680, 32gb ram), keyframing sucks, etc. I realize some people love it, so I'm a big fan of "to each his own"... but IMO I think Apple has got a good bit of work left to do on this before I'd consider doing another project on it. Hopefully for a 10.1 announcement during this NAB week...
