FCPS Academic or not?

So here's my situation. I have an academic copy of FCPS and I want to move up to FCPS 2. Unfortunately, I can't purchase the upgrade because it wont work with the Academic version of the software. However, I noticed that nowhere on the box, discs, user manual, or within the software does it denote that I have the academic version. Neither does it say "Not for Resale". In fact, on the serial number sticker it reads "Final Cut Pro Studio Retail".

Did I luck out and get a retail copy by accident or is there some place I am not looking? Should I take a chance and order the upgrade, or just pay the extra 200 for a new academic version?

if the sticker says retail, then you've probably got a retail copy. you should call apple to verify it before you buy the upgrade, if you are unsure.

If it's an academic version, it would clearly look like this at startup:

Granted, you might not be Ralph Wiggum and your serial number might not be 867-5309-666-LIVE-NUDES

Over the last 3 years I have ordered 3 versions of Final Cut Studio for Young Irish Film Makers, a youth film training organisation, and we always paid the educational price and got the regular version of Final Cut. When I was ordering I asked the sales person if there was a difference when ordering from the educational store and he said that we would be getting the very same software just at a lower price. Maybe that's why!?!

The only difference is the serial number. You'll be able to order the upgrade no matter what you have, but when it comes to installing you wont be able to upgrade an educational or NFR license. Which does suck for those of us that get NFRs.....
but there's more than one way to skin a cat
