FCP5/DVX100a "Prob w/ tape" capture issue

Hi everyone

Just unpacked my PowerMac and installed FCP. Went to capture some 60i through the DVX and about two seconds into it, the process aborted and I recvd a "prob with tape" error message. I tried it both by setting in and out points and with Capture Now.

It happens at different spots - always after a second or two, pretty much right when the fan kicks in. I tried it with several different tapes. On a few I got a 'General Error' message instead of the 'problem with tape message'. In those instances, the capture screen never popped up at all. Any ideas as to what's going on? I checked through the manual and didn't see much on the subject. I'm hoping that I just have something in preferences set incorrectly. Help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Lain

Make sure you have all the latest updates toy your system, QT and FCP.
Do a permissions repair and make sure you have enough memory and disk space.
Try an alternate firewire port.

Thanks for the info, Scott. I gave it all a try and am still experiencing the problem. If it help my set-up is as follows: PowerMac G5 (2.7GHz/1G mem/400HD). Device control is set to FireWire NTSC (tried both front and rear ports). Capture input is set to DV NTSC 48 kHz. My scratch disk is a lacie 250gb connected via the usb port on the front (tho I've also given it a shot with the internal HD). On the LAFCUG forum someone mentioned that the lacie can't be connected through the USB port. I'll give it a shot with it on the FW, but I am still concerned as I also tried to capture to the internal HD with the same result.

I am having a similar problem. I cannot capture with my FCP 5 and it won't even find my firewire. yet if i capture with iMovie (yuck) it let's me capture. I was able to capture with FCP 4 so I am wondering what happened here. The funny thing also is fcp says it can't find the apple external firewire devise yet in the log and capture window the timecode is read and continues to read as I play the tape although I get no picture and no capture and it shows the firewire (missing). I've read through the threads but none of the fixes seems to help here. Anybody?

Calvin: try fast forwarding your tape a bit. If it rewinds to the beginning of the tape FCP usually has problems. i general put color bars or record just random stuff at the beginning of all my tapes to avoid this problem.

At this point, I've narrowed it down to either a bad tape(s) or camera compatibility issue. I'm having no problem capturing anything that was shot on the DVX that I'm using as a deck. It's only with tapes that were shot on a rented Canon XL-1 that the problem is occuring. There are quite a few of them (10ish) and ALL of them abort almost immediately when I try to capture. The tape seems to be playing fine in that I can see it in the viewer screen when I press play. As soon as I press capture now (or try to capture using set in and out points), however, the whole process aborts. I also don't think the tapes themselves are bad in that some of them are from the same box as those that I used in the DVX, which are capturing fine. Any ideas???

Thinking of giving it a shot with iMovie. Anything to get it in an editing system as it's my behind the scenes footage and I need to get my hands on a few tidbits.

yes iMovie is good in a pinch for problems like these. i still however cannot capture at all to fcp with my dvx. it's driving me nuts.
