Hi, I'm about to begin working on a recently telecined B&W 16mm film. Was shot in the late '50s, has recently been restored. The digital master is a QT movie, Component Y'CbCr 10-bit 4:2:2 codec. It's 35 minutes in length and comes in at a hefty 274 GB. Basically, I will initially be making an SD DVD of the film in its current state, as well as add a few chapters of bonus footage/interviews that were shot at DVCPro 1080/24pa. Final delivery will be SD DVD, and hopefully will eventually be available in Bluray.

I'm wondering which is the best codec to bring the file into FCP, or should I just bring it into Compressor to find out which the best compression rate will be for SD DVD delivery?

I'm using FCP 6 on a 8-core xeon 3ghz Mac Pro w/ 10gb of RAM. However, machine stutters when trying to view the QT file, which has a current bitrate of 1,063 Mbit/s.

As always, any suggestions much appreciated!

ProRes 4444 would be my suggestion to preserve the original though chances are if it's going to SD DVD you'd see little difference going to ProRes HQ.
