FCP Workflow question - rendering of doom

Hey,

Since I'm still new to FCP I've not worked out the kinks. Coming from Vegas I was able to play any clip easily and if it stuttered would just change the preview window to draft and watch away.

On FCP I'm aware of the evils of needing to render, but I'm concerned about how long it takes and believe there must be a work around.

E.G. Today I'm adding some credits to the end of a clip as it fades down. So I move the titles in then want to adjust their properties so the clip fading down does so at a later point, so I drag the fade to what I want it to be.

Now I need to re-render FCP tells me w/big red bars.

I've done Option+P to preview it in choppy low res crappiness, but it's really not good enough so I can see no other option and let the 3 second segment render out.

Two minutes later (ish) I watch it. No it needs another change, make change (10 seconds) render (2 mins) again.

I don't understand, what's the work around here as I can't imagine any editor wouldn't go insane working like this?

I can only think of dynamic rt or some user setting as helping but I don't imagine FCP would be that affected by such things and that there isn't a smarter and more obvious work around I, in my newbie ness, is missing.

Cheers gents.

What kind of footage are you working with, are you using the appropriate sequence settings and what kind of Mac are you on? Also, if you go Tools->QuickView you'll get a looping RAM preview (you can set the duration from 2-10 seconds I think) which is useful to avoid the tweak, render, tweak, render, tweak, render cycle.

I'm using either XD Cam native footage (1080P) or 422. On a MBP, bought last year so not the super new ones but still pretty good - 4gb of ram etc.

Why not set your play back to 'unlimited' instead of real time. Will still be kind of choppy, but you don't have to option+p it. (click RT button on top left of timeline).

Other than that, there is no way to watch FCP generated titles without rendering. The other option is to build them in motion and export them as a quicktime (with the same settings as your time line. Motion previews pretty well and once it is a quicktime, it will play seamlessly in FCP.
