fcp won't overlay or insert edit

Sometimes, when I try to make a simple overlay or insert edit, I get the "operation not allowed" message.

What's with that? I'm not too sure why a video editing program wouldn't let me edit. The crazy thing is, it doesn't happen all the time, and I haven't been able to isolate the "no edit" situation.

I've thrown away the prefs and stuff, same problem.
Any ideas?

Is there an in/out point still left on the timeline when you're trying to overlay/insert a clip from the viewer? FCP will assume you want to put the clip into the in/out of the timeline regardless of your in/out of the clip in the viewer … and if the clip is not long enough to meet in the timeilne's in/out requirements, you get .. NOT ALLOWED! :)

Yeah, I've done all that mess, reset in/out's, delete in/out's etc. I wanna find out if anyone else experiences this.
