FCP Won't Open!!

With no previous warning signs, I turned on my computer this morning and FCP won't open. I tried both clicking on the icon under applications and on various individual project files, both to no avail. It begins opening and then quits before the interface shows up.

This could be an issue specific to FCP, or it could be a simple Mac issue that I'm not seeing.

Could it have something to do with registering the software? Anyone else ever experience this, or know what the problem might be?

I tried restarting, shutting down, unplugging my deck, plugging it in, everything. And I tried following the troubleshooting steps provided by Mac. Nothing.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

You need to trash your preferences and then start it up again:

Delete the User Preferences

You can resolve many issues by restoring Final Cut Pro back to its original settings. This will not impact your project files, but you should verify your Scratch Disk location setting after doing this. To reset your Final Cut Pro user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences—the tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
Remove the "com.apple.finalcutpro.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Remove the "Final Cut Pro User Data" folder from the Preferences folder.

I had the same problem and this fixed it. The steps above are presuming you're using FCP 5, since it stores Preferences in a different place than FCP 4.

EDIT: You will then want to go out and download FCP Rescue 5 at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14729 This will allow you to save your preferences and settings if this happens again.

the folks on this forum never let me down. it was the preferences. thanks.

i'd love to know WHY this happens (i understand its a very common thing), so if anyone happens to know exactly, feel free to chim in.

thanks again for the help.
