fcp won't letterbox 16.9 footage

Im trying to drop a 16.9 video on a 4.3 timeline to get it to letterbox it. For some reason it wont. I thought this worked, is there something Im doing wrong? probably!
Anyone got any suggestions?
 
Try rendering-out the 16:9 to a self contained movie and bring it back in. That might work. You know it's going to look squashed in a 4:3 timeline.
 
It shouldn't look squashed in a 4:3 timeline. It should be letterboxed widescreen.

Is it anamorphic in an anamorphic timeline? If so it should go letterboxed when you drop it onto a 4by3.

Try dropping a 16:9 sequence into a 4:3 sequence.

couple simple thoughts
- must make sure clips are flagged as anamorphic. Scroll through browser until you see anamorphic. If clips are not checked, must put a check to flag them as anamorphic.
- clips have to be dragged into a 4:3 timeline. They can't be copied and pasted or have the sequence switched. They must be dropped clean into a 4:3 timeline.

Hope this helps. If you've done all the above and it don't work... have to put thinking caps on!
