FCP won't let me log capture!! arghh!

I have my DVX hooked up, via brand new fire wire, I continue to activate log and capture setting, it opens, but i don't get an image on the viewer, however I have VTR communications working, but it wont capture anything at all. And everytime I open fcp it says external device removed, but it isn't, plus i'm getting a signal, but it still sells fire wire missing. Any quick fixes would be greatly appreciated
 
Just to make sure, you have the camera in VCR mode? If you have it in camera mode, you'll still get VTR communication because you can do direct capture as long as the timecode log is turned off.
