FCP will not capture through firewire...help!

What should my settings be?

I bought a $300 camera with firewire slot, and it doesn't work (neither did my DVX100 before I went out to buy the new camera to edit with/capture into my Media100)... I have some clips from Media100 which I put on tape and want to log into my FCP 4 through my small mini-dv camera I bought at the store but it won't read it... Here is what I have as settings while trying to Log & Capture:

Device Control: Firewire NTSC

Capture/Input: DV NTSC 48 kz

Scratch Discs: Free Space: 12.9 GB (AV) (Unknown)

PREVIEW DISABLED on the preview capture screen on right hand side.

Also, this is Final Cut Pro 4 on a G4 computer.

I'm trying to get it to connect so that I can log and capture.

I'd test first to capture in iMovie or QTPro. See if indeed your FW port is working.

Second... what kind of G4? I had a 1.2x dual that worked just fine... but much less than a single 800 is going to give you problems.

Let's figure out if the FW port is good first.

Might be the case where the FW port isn't good, but that's weird because with my other editing program which I use all the time, the firewire connects to it and it ALWAYS reads it and never has any issue with it.

It would not capture in iMovie nor FCP. The G4 is from 2003 around. But still, it works on Media100 and I do not believe there is any way to create 2:35:1 bars on there. The sole reason for trying to get onto FCP is to log footage from my camera into FCP, add the 2:35:1 bars and then export back out and place it back in my other editing program and then put onto DVD.

I saw on another forum someone said it may be a bunch of issues and not just one, meaning that it may be a dozen of settings in the program that make it not able to preview the capture and capture in general.

When I open the program, it tells me that the deck is "offline". Maybe that helps?

"Unable to initialize video deck. You may still log offline clips or use capture now"

Select non-controllable device then capture now.

Also be sure to power your computer, plug in camera, power up camera, then launch FCP. That order worked for me.

Not to forget making sure the camera is in VTR mode.

The G4... what's the specs on it?

Also... if we KNEW which G4... what color is it? Does it have mirrored doors in the front? Does it have FW800?? I could tell you where your PMU switch is and you could reset that.

you can go to your apple icon "About this Computer"

check to see your firewire port is recognizing your camera

Greyish color tower with mirrored doors in the front. Not sure if it has FW800. Any way to check in settings?

It said "No Firewire Devices Found" - Yet, whenever I edit with my Media100 program, I am able to capture footage onto that editing system. Hmm.

So what can I do now?

"FireWire Information: No FireWire devices found".

Also, the computer is a Mac OSX 10.2.8

The FW 800 port is a squarish plug rather than the arrowish plug of the 400.

Hmmm... PMU... should be a little white button on the logic board. UNPLUG the computer and press the button. Don't press it multiple times. and DON'T touch anything else on the board. Keep your other hand on the Hard Drives.

Wait a few minutes and plug in the CPU. Restart.

Tried another FireWire cable and it didn't work but that one may have been a defective one.... The one I've used for other editing programs work so I'm not sure what the issue is.... Help?

Hmmm 10.2... what version of QT is it?

Also... I'm talking about the 800 port, not the cable. But that might not matter now. However, you still haven't asked what the speed of the computer's cpu is. About this Mac... Processor.

TB

QT Version 6.5.1 is the version of QT.

Some info on the Hardware:

Machine Speed - 867 MHZ
Bus Speed - 133 MHz
Number of processors 2
Machine Model - Power Mac G4 (version =2.1)

I trashed it with FCPRescue and it asked me what HD to use it and I put my regular hard-drive and it said what setting for the other question and I said NTSC. It's still not working. Says what it said last time. Hmm.

Not sure if I'd like to check the PMU as I am not that savy with the interior of a G4 tower or anything electronic.

You don't want to capture stuff on your system drive... is that where you are trying?

PMU is a source of power for the FW port. Resetting it can sometimes fix FW bugs. I recommend trying it. Just keep your spare hand on the HDs (Something metal) and you'll be fine.

If you don't want to do that...

When was the last time you turned everything off, un plugged EVERYTHING (I mean EVERYTHING) from the computer and left it for 15 minutes? Called the guinness method. But it also helps clear the cruff from your innards.
