FCP & widescreen effect question

is there a way to avoid the widescreen black bars from adjusting when I adjust the image in the canvas window?

I want to move in on my image a little more but the blackbars get smaller when I do this.

get a blank psd file and put it on a layer above the video your using with, put the matte on the blank psd file.

Another method would be to put on a Color video generator from the Matte bin under Video Generators in effects. Place this on the top track so it affects everything below it. Add a Mask Shape from the Matte bin in Video Filters. Set the Shape to Rectangle. Horizontal Scale to 100, and Vertical Scale to the size of your choice. It may take a little experimentation to get just what you want. (You may want to start at 74.9 --- 80 is level with the title safe box.) Then make sure to check the Invert box. After you've done all this, if the color of the bars is wrong, go to Controls and change the color (preferably to black?)

Now you have room to move your picture without moving the widescreen bars.
