FCP vs Vegas vs Avid

Other than stuff that has to do with 24P what's the big deal with FCP and Avid and Pennacle (sp?).

I've been using Premiere for years and I'm thinking about switching to Vegas after all the good stuff I've heard about it.

But, what's so special about FCP and Avid? Which one's better? and under what circumstances would one need to use those programs (editing for the big screen?)?

Re: FCP vs Vegas vs Avid

The question here is not which one is better, but which one you feel most confortable with.

I have heard good stuff about Vegas, but I have never tried it myself.

Some people are going to say Avid is better because it is pretty similar to the Avid systems that have been used in Hollywood for 2 or 3 decades (can some one confirm this please!)

Other people will say that Final Cut Pro is become a standard. To be honest, I really love Final Cut Pro, and I don't think I am going to spend money on Avid just because it is what the industry uses.

I am pretty comfortable with FCP, and that is what I use and will continue to use.

I have used premiere in the past, but I prefer FCP.

Just try them out and judge for yourself.

All the best

Fidel.

Doesn't FCP and Avid let you edit at higher resolutions. Isn't Premiere pretty much just for broadcast and not for footage intended for film transfer?

I guess in other words, would you regret doing your editing in Premiere or Vegas when it came time to transfer to film?

Re: FCP vs Vegas vs Avid

Vegas handles every resolution -- SD, PAL, HD . . .

Barry Green (resident Tech guru) thinks Vegas handles 24p better than any of 'em, so filmout on Vegas is ideal.

Re: FCP vs Vegas vs Avid

Pinnacle's Liquid Edition, though a fine program in many respects, is the only one of that class (FCP, Avid, Vegas, Premiere, etc.) which hasn't taken a stab at 24p.

I personally think it'll shrivel and die, because they've taken a wrong turn in that respect.

Re: FCP vs Vegas vs Avid

Here's the way I think of it:

If you're on a Mac, the choice is FCP or Avid.

If you're on a PC, the choice is Vegas or Avid.

Vegas isn't on the Mac, and FCP isn't on the PC, so that rules those out.

If you intend to work in post shops that use Avid, then get the Avid. If you're doing your own work for your own purposes, then pick your computer platform and go with the program that runs on that platform (Vegas or FCP).

I chose Vegas, and it's hard to imagine being happier than I am with it. Mac users swear by FCP. And yes, as David says, I do think (having read numerous posts by various users) that Vegas handles 24P better than the others, and I've done a film-out from footage edited in Vegas, and I would have no problem recommending it highly.

If, however, you were shooting on film, and you were doing an offline edit of videotapes and were intending to conform your edit to the negative and make a matchback and go cut the negative and make a film print from that, I think Avid may be the better choice.

Thanks, that was very helpful. I'm going to try switching to Vegas. I think I'll like it better than Premiere.
