FCP vs Sony Vegas vs Premiere

Hello everyone! Final Cut Pro pretty much seems to be the industry standard where editing is concerned. Is anyone using this on a macbook pro? How effectively can editing sessions be conducted. What are the specs of some people editing with FCP on macbooks?

Cheers!
Dave.

Well at this point in time. Avid is still the industry standard, but Final Cut is catching up quick, but i think avid will still be the industry standard for quite some time (yeah, I'm a Final Cut editor too)

Laptops are great because they are a little cheaper and portable, but the real work hoses are the mac pro towers. More room for ram and HD space. I work on both a laptop and a tower, but prefer the tower any day.

Video (especially HD) takes up a lot of space. I would say at least 500gb of internal space, at least 500gb of external space and at least 2gb of ram for starting out. Of course this all depends on how much work you have and how much media you deal with. I find that 2gb of ram, and sometimes even 4gb is a bit slow when running motion.

All of our Call Box training DVDs was edited(and authored) both on Mac Pros and Mac Book Pros. More than up for the task. 2.0 to 2.6 Ghz machines btw. With an external Firewire 800 RAID you're basically all set.

question:

is 8gb of ram enough to edit HD easily?

What is a ATTO dedicated RAID hardware for mac?

Which capture card?

I think Macaholic said avid may not with ati? that true?

I have a regular macbook that runs FCP just fine.

Although I only have 250GB and I made a simple video to learn the ropes. I haven't tried anything super fancy yet. I'm working on a client's mac tower and it's awesome :)

8GB ram is fine. my mac pro only has 6 and i don't see a need for more

a RAID is totally unnecessary if only editing HD. pretty much any FW400 or FW800 running ay 7200rpm or faster will be fine. Macbook Pro is great for HD or SD. I just cut a project shot on the HPX500 on my Macbook (not pro) and a FW400 drive in my hotel room while on the road. Not as fast as my Mac Pro tower but got the job done....

Cheezweezl...that is not true. This depends on the format of HD you are editing. There are more HD formats than HDV, DVCPRO HD and XDCAM. There is HDCAM, HDCAM SR, D5, RED, Phantom, DPX...And none of the latter can be edited off of firewire drives.

Forget about industry standards, unless you need to mesh or interface with these standards. Get the NLE that does what you need it to do.

Is it safe to assume getting a macbook pro with 4GBRAM and a top processor speed and a 500GB HD would be sufficient for video editing (non HD) in FCP? At the moment Im not looking to make films which I would upload, but rather compile creative showreels of material from clients. (With transitions, effects, the whole works)

Btw does anyone know much about Adobe Encore? I know it functions as a DVD authoring program but can you edit movies with this application too?

Cheers!
Dave.

Encore will let you compile clips - so if you have clips that you dont need to cut, you can line them up and burn. Ive never found letting a DVD authoring programme convert your files to the appropriate format the best way to do this as far as image quality goes.

Could I chop up and edit those clips with transitions in Encore? Or is it simply 'line up and burn'?

Cheerio!
