FCP Upgrade

I just received the Final Cut Studio Crossgrade upgrade form Apple and wondering how to proceed.
Current system is a Dual 1.8 G5 with OS 10.3.9 and FCS 4.5.

I also have a new copy of OS 4.0 Tiger in the box.

What is the best way to upgrade the system?
I have never upgraded anything on this computer since it has been purchased and am worried that I am in for a headache. I am thinking I should do a clean install and start from scratch. Is this the way to go?

Thanks

Yes, clean install is the way to go.

Backup EVERYTHING you can. Most forgotten important items are email accounts, messages, network conections, internet access configurations, etc.

I'm gonna disagree a little. Sure clean install is *best* but boy is it tedious.

I've found that "Archive & Install" yields great results with few to no headaches.

That said, if you have Tiger OSX 10.4.0 you WILL want to upgrade to 10.4.7 and to do that download the standalone combo updater from Apple, don't use the Software Update feature.

Repair Permissions before and after a System upgrade.

I'd strongly disagree. Run Disk Utility on all drives, Disk Warrior on all drives, install the 5.1 upgrade. Archive & Install has always worked great for me. I honestly don't believe in the "clean install" theory, either. I've just personally seen too many successful software upgrades work properly. Just my 2 cents.

I just sent off my disks and check for $49 + tax today. How long does it take for them to process things and send out the new disks?

I am probably going to take my G5 to the place I bought it and let them deal with putting the upgrade on there...They put FCP and bundled software on there when I got the MAC. I rather just pay a few bucks and have someone who knows what they are doing install that stuff...knowing me I will screw something up! LOL!

You can't really mess it up. Follow BenB's advice.

As for me, I'm usually an optimist about it and just install over the old stuff when it comes to upgrades. Just throw in the disks and run the upgrade.

Backup is for wussies!!!! :P

Backup is for those of us who pay our house notes with this business. Not backing up is for slackers who don't have enough self respect to own their own clothes, much less a home to provide for their families.

Oh run the upgrade yourself! They can't magically make it work when you can't! They're going to do what you'd do yourself, and not know any better! Apple certified service centers fix hardware. They know NOTHING about the pro app software.
