FCP unable to initialize HVX

Have captured from the cam many times.

But suddenly my mac is "unable to initialize" the cam.

have tried multiple cables - even have tried iMovie - have tried multiple computers and none of them can see it.

FCP 5.14 on all computers - latest quicktime - same result with or without external drives/devices.

Sure would appreciate any ideas.
 
latest p2 drivers? latest firmware on cam? do the cards pop up on the dektop like disks?
if not, prob not a fcp issue.

leopard? i have had probs with leopard not liking the hvx but working fine with p2 cards via pcm slot...
 
Trying to capture from miniDV, not P2 so I doubt latest firmware would matter, am I right? Also have discovered that the Mac can "see" my little sony home camcorder no problem - but when I plug in HVX, nuttin!
 
yes, of course - beginning to wonder if I'm suffering from a dead firewire port on the cam - i've read this is a somewhat common problem.
