FCP to SHAKE for SmoothCam work

Cool Cpt... handy for a new FCP user like me just to see anything. You keep doing these and there might be another shake user before long.

My cup overflowth.... as ever I'm sure I speak for many people here when I thankyou for your time in producing these tutorials :) I for one find them extreamely informative.
Regards

Indy....

I have Shake on the way. One of the first things I'm going to try is the tutorial on SmoothCam...

SmoothCam is truly awesome and very simple to use. The only problem is that you generally can only constrain vertical movement (assuming you are cropping), otherwise you end up with problems with borders on the sides. You can solve it by scaling of course, but sometimes that is not desirable.

CaptM, I would be interested to know what you are doing for slomo. I have had great luck with some of the more tricky things like the primatte key and 3d composites, but I can't get the darn slomo to work properly to save my life :)

Yeah -- I actually started this tutorial already, and came into a problem I didn't have before... it deals with using clips bigger than what you want... shifted my clip all over the place.

Not what I wanted.

Works great for self contained material... but how often are you working in self contained stuff.

Also -- as for the smoothcam... there really isn't a fix... part of the cost of doing business... I guess you could paint if you wanted to... Might give that a try in my QuickPaint tutorial. I've also just banked on the title safe area. Works good for broadcast... not so well for web.

From these posts it appears that folks are using Shake mostly for smoothcam and slomo. Anyone using the other effects options and, if so, which and how are those working for you?

Bus -- that wasn't the intent of this post nor of what I was trying to do with the tutorials...

I use Shake for super compositing messes that would cause you to get VERY lost in AfterEffects. The full power of Shake is really unbelievable.

However, what I wanted to show here were a few easy things to do in Shake that make your FCP editing better. I'm almost done the slowmotion tutorial and it is very obvious that adjusting speed in Shake is superior to doing it in FCP... so why not do those things in Shake as soon as you get it -- because, for me, shake took a LONG time to even understand.

But that's just me. To answer your question... it's amazing.

Here's my future plans on this series:

SmoothCam - done
Morphing - done
Speed Control - almost done
Keying
Motion tracking

Hmmm... any others?

Here are some topics/areas that I would think to be essential to anyone doing compositin in Shake, at least, these are things I use almost everytime I work on a shot:

1. Multipass compositing
2. Good, effective lightwrap techniques
3. Rotoshapes and good rotoscoping techniques, including tracking roto points
4. Lighting/relighting CG in Shake (really cool technique I recently stumbled upon)
5. Multiplane compositing/camera projection

Those are a few that come to mind, if I think of some more, I'll add them.

Man -- those are some great topics... Those are the ones I see as moving into poweruser mode... but great none the less.

Thanks

Capt- looking forward to seeing your sample but your .Mac bandwith is exceeded. I would love to see your series though as I am considering Shake as well.

One of the big uses I could get out of it is advanced Keying/motion tracking that is considered harder to do in FCP. For example, making the sky a whole different color, as well as specific actors or backdrop elements. These can be done in FCP, but get a little ugly if some of the colors go off and you have to keyframe on every frame for most of the ideas.

There is a product called (Mokey that has some awesome stuff in it that I am sure you can replicate with Shake. Anyway, your idea looks like a winner!

Ya = darn them apple!!

Being in San Jose... would you mind going and knocking on Apple's door for me???

Working on some other hosting for these and any future tutorials.

I'm hoping with this new partnership I have I might actually take some time with them and make them a finished product... rather than the kid-interuptus-fest I've got now.

We'll see.

Right now I can't afford to loose my bandwidth. Before Apple could even send me an email they turned off my site (which they did eventually) my Mom actually called asking where her grandkid's pictures were... (not what happened to MY site...).

Ugh.

Wow, apple is a real bandwith nazi! Good God, don't they make enough money yet? They are slowly becoming the next Microsoft huh?

wtf brought that on?

Capt keep them coming. You put out some really help full stuff. Even to us guys who do this stuff all the time I have gone and checked out your site on a few acations to remind my self how to do somethings.

Capt- I went and yelled at Steve Jobs from the corner of 280 and DeAnza for you. I'm not sure if he heard me! :P

Try out the host I use, they have QT streaming: Dreamhost
