FCP to OS X problem, HELP??

Ok so my computer started acting funny (sluggish, and the little rolling wheel kept rolling) a couple of weeks ago showing the kernel twice and then after restarting the computer it was saying "OS X failed," then tried to restart again, do you want to report this or something like that". So make a long story short, I reinstalled OS X 10.2.7 and I'm now starting over. Whats the best way of reconnecting everything back to 10.4.4 or whatever it is now? Do I need to reinstall panther or is there an easier way of reconnecting it back to start up disk?

Also when I reinstalled 10.2.7 I chose the option of saving previous system folders and so on, if that helps.

I think the problem was OS X 10.4.4, as soon as I reinstalled the orignal OS X it worked fine, but it's real old school looking and I'm now forced to use up more memory to reinstall.

I know this sounds like alot for whoever is reading this, but I just had a heart attack sorry.

OS X is not known for becoming so corrupt it has to be re-installed. It's just not a UNIX thing. I would get something like Tech Tools and run a scan of the hard drive. You may have a sick one. I'd suspect something other than the OS getting corrupted, as it's simply not something UNIX systems are prone to.

What model of Mac are your running?

I'd upgrade to 10.4.8 if you're running FCP 5.1.2.

Just FYI, once a week I run MacJanitor (freeware, run EVERYTHING it does), then Disk Utility to repair all drives. Once a month I run Disk Warrior. This is just good housekeeping and can save you having to go through your situation again.

G5 Dual 2GHz

I'm still running FCP 4.5, haven't made the switch yet.

Ok so I tried to install Panther and no go, it's telling me Disk error need to restart. I can log in and click around, but everything is very very sluggish. When opening a new window it trails as it opens, and I can't open some programs like iphoto, quicktime, x11, system profiler. So if I need to reinstall whats the best way of going about it? Should I delete everything and start over or ?

Thank you so much for your time I really appreciate it.

Chris

I've been really good about keeping it clean, I've never had this problem, who knows I might of deleted something by accident. You know I was going to buy disk warrior and I was told I didn't need it.

Ok so I think I found my older systems folder, and I also took a look at the startup disk. I now can only startup from OS X 10.2.7 or network, I'm kinda of confused on what to do from here.

Could also be a drive in the process of failing. I so hate to be such a downer...

It could be a software problem, not saying it can't, but, symptoms, symptoms, I'll wait and see.

If you boot from your install disk, Disk Utilities should be available under some menu on that first or second screen. Use it to erase your hard drive, if that's resonable for you to do. OR run Disk Utilities from the Install DVD when you have booted from it.

Last night my computer wouldnt allow me to log in; all it did was stay at the gray screen with the apple logo centered and the gear kept spinning and spinning without kicking over to login screen (and fans kicked in heavily)
So I reinstalled the gray disc that came with the computer (10.2.7) and clicked the option of saving the recovery files. I was then able to log in after resetting my password (cuz it didnt remember for some reason..) Now when I log in, it starts slow but some programs open and some don't. But the computer is very very sluggish...I have a dual display and when dragging the mouse, it sticks.

So is it wise for me to erase everything or is there another quick fix?P

PS-- I have Panther and and an upgraded version of Tiger....when trying to install Panther it won't allow me to ..."disc error" .."restart computer and start again"
What would be the next step for that???

THANKS!

Ok so it looks like $120.00, and if you're sure it's going to work, then I guess I'm off on my way tomorrow. Do I need to reinstall everything before or after?

You just reinstalled everything and you are already having problems like it not being able to see the boot drive? There are two things that could be happening:

- You installed a program that a part of your system on your computer is conflicting with/or did not like.

- Your hard drive is going bad.

Tech Tools is not going to fix a hard drive that is dying of mechanical failure, but it will TELL you if it is dying of mechanical failure. In your case, I doubt it's going to fix any problem. The best thing for you to do is buy a new hard drive for the same amount of money and reinstall everything onto that. THEN- have your old hard drive in the secondary hard drive and copy over the files you need.

Ok so after running a few tests, I've found that one of the two apple ram sticks is bad ( well that's what the apple hardware test is telling me). The weird thing is that I've had the two apple sticks for about two years or so, well I guess it's time. So I'm hoping that's the problem and if it is, should I reinstall again, then upgrade to tiger and delete the older system folders?

This is the part I'm confused on what I should do.

1. I reinstalled the disk that came with the computer (OS X 10.2.7) and when I installed, I chose the option that saves existing system folder settings or whatever it said. :)

2. I ran the apple test and took out the bad ram.

3. Now what should I do is my question???

Thanks guys & gals

Revert to the old system folder, how do I go about doing this ? I've tried to bring it into the start up disk window, no go. I see it in my HD, but that's it.

"Take out the bad RAM stick"

I think I need to take out both sticks right, that's what I was always told (it being a dual processors)? :)

The RAM is not related to the processors in the way you are thinking. Yes, you will probably have to take out both sticks if you do not know which one is bad, but you should be able to run from one stick of RAM. Whatever the case, you will need to get new RAM to replace the old one, and yes, you are supposed to install them in two's. BUT.... you can run a Mac from one stick. Whatever the case, you should not be running your computer with the bad stick in it.

To revert to your old system folder, start up from a bootable CD. Rename the "previous system" folder to "System" and rename the current system folder to something else. You may have to do this with the library folder as well. For more info, you can check this link at Apple:

Here goes

1. Since I've already installed 10.2.7 (the original disk) and now have the older systems folder (tiger, and all of the upgrades I've done over the years) still there, do I need to delete this one?

2. I tried to rename the folders, it wouldn't let me. Do I need to reboot with the 10.2.7 disk first or ?

3. If I choose erase and install, does that erase everything, all of my apps (FCP, Motion, Maya, etc...), plugins, Docs, or just the osx folder stuff?

Man I'm kinda of confused on this part again, I'm just about to wipe the drive and start over. :(

Like I said, boot up with a CD, rather than the hard drive. Put the OS disk in, restart, and hold the C key down.

Once in there, you will be able to rename the folders.

Ok so I rebooted and change the startup disk to the cd, it keeps taking me to the install screen, not allowing me to the log in screen. Is there something I'm missing, thank you for your patience, I'm not to good with this stuff.

You should be able to quit from the install program and get to a finder.

If not:

What other disks do you have? Any firewire drives you could boot off of?

You should really be asking this stuff on the Apple support forum as there are many more users that could help you.

I have the gray CD that came with the computer that I've been trying to use.

All 3 panther disks

1 tiger disk

and a xcode tools disk

I've tried to perform a upgrade install with both panther and tiger and no go, it's telling me " error software install unsuccessful, please try again or something like that"
